More than 5 000 people visited the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre Complex on Thursday, to hear spiritual guru Dr Deepak Chopra’s words of wisdom.
Welcoming Chopra to Durban, mayor James Nxumalo said his address – themed “The Future of Well-Being” – would be a message of hope in a country where poverty, unemployment and inequality were the biggest social issues.
Chopra, a medical doctor specialising in internal medicine, the study of hormones and brain chemistry, said South Africa was ranked 89th out of 140 countries in the well-being scale.
Only 17 percent of the population was considered to be thriving on the well-being scale.
He said 77 percent of the population was struggling, while the balance was considered to be suffering.
“This is where major crisis occurs with social unrest; this all happens when people continue to suffer.”
He said leaders – whom he defined as anyone – could create eco-system spaces of well-being to communicate and solve problems.
The first step was to create a “mind spa”, which is where the dialogue would take place, connect with each other through the internet, produce content for social and personal transformation and create a platform for feedback.
Chopra will take the Inanda Heritage Route tour on Friday, where he will place flowers at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
He will also visit the Ohlange Institute, where Nelson Mandela placed his first vote.
