This August 16-19 at the Chopra Center’s signature mind-body healing workshop, Journey into Healing, two of the world’s leaders in the field of mind-body medicine – Deepak Chopra, M.D. and Dean Ornish, M.D. – will share cutting-edge research and practical lifestyle tools that help people grow younger, live longer, and have more fun and joy in life.

“Only a few decades ago, conventional medicine viewed the body as a machine whose parts would inevitably break down until it could no longer be repaired. We were taught that random chemical reactions determined everything that happened in the body, that genes largely determined our health and lifespan, and that heart disease, many cancers, and other illnesses were ‘incurable,’” said Dr. Chopra.

“Through the groundbreaking clinical research of Dr. Dean Ornish and many other pioneering minds in the medical community, we now know that through comprehensive lifestyle changes, we can prevent and reverse disease – and live longer, happier lives.

"At our Journey into Healing course, we will explore these exciting developments in mind-body medicine and teach the hands-on, daily tools for creating a lifestyle that supports our health, vitality, and ultimate longevity,” Deepak Chopra said.

Led by Chopra Center founder Deepak Chopra, M.D., the Chopra Center’s expert physicians and master educators, and guest speakers such as Dean Ornish M.D., Andrew Weil, M.D. and other mind-body healing experts, Journey into Healing brings together the most recent developments in medical science and the ancient wisdom of traditional healing systems, with a special emphasis on Ayurvedic medicine.

Journey into Healing also includes:

     • Instruction in Primordial Sound Meditation and daily group meditations

     • Morning and evening Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga classes (all levels)

     • The science of Ayurveda and a mind-body perspective on health and disease

     • The role of emotions and the mind in health and wellbeing

     • CME credits for physicians and other health care practitioners

This August’s Journey into Healing will feature simultaneous interpretation for Spanish speakers. It will take place August 16-19 at La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California.

About Deepak Chopra, M.D., F.A.C.P.

Founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing

Deepak Chopra, M.D. is the author of more than 65 books, including numerous New York Times bestsellers. His medical training is in internal medicine and endocrinology, and he is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and an adjunct professor of Executive Programs at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.

He is also a Distinguished Executive Scholar at Columbia Business School, Columbia University, and a Senior Scientist at the Gallup organization. For more than a decade, he has participated as a lecturer at the Update in Internal Medicine, an annual event sponsored by Harvard Medical School’s Department of Continuing Education and the Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

“Deepak Chopra has successfully blended ancient Vedanta Philosophy with his unique perspective on modern medicine to provide a vast audience with solutions that meet many needs for our modern age. He is among the influential scholars, authors, and thinkers like Arthur Schopenhauer, Carl Jung, and Aldous Huxley who have found truth in the Perennial Philosophy and developed ways to help people apply that truth to their daily lives.” ~Huston Smith

About Dean Ornish, M.D.

Dr. Dean Ornish is one of the leading voices in the medical community promoting a balanced, holistic approach to health, and proving that it works. As the founder, president, and director of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, Dr. Ornish directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery.

His recent research demonstrated that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease. In collaboration with Nobel laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, PhD, he also showed that these lifestyle changes can lengthen telomeres, the ends of chromosomes that control how long we live.

Dr. Ornish is the author of six best-selling books, including: Dr. Dean Ornish's Program for Reversing Heart Disease; Eat More, Weigh Less; Love & Survival; and his most recent book, The Spectrum. The Ornish diet was rated #1 for heart health by U.S. News & World Report in 2011.

"Instead of trying to motivate [patients] with the 'fear of dying,' Ornish reframes the issue. He inspires a new vision of the 'joy of living' – convincing them they can feel better, not just live longer." ~ Fast Company

Dr. Ornish has received many honors and awards and was chosen by LIFE Magazine as one of the most influential members of his generation. Among his many pursuits, he is now working with food corporations to help stop America's obesity pandemic from spreading around the globe. The research that he and his colleagues conducted has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Circulation, The New England Journal of Medicine, the American Journal of Cardiology, The Lancet Oncology, and elsewhere.

This `turning on` of healthy genes appears to be a cutting edge intervention in `deterministic` genetic make-up. This is very futuristic. pratibha chopra

Hi, Are there other dates and locations for this workshop? I am just finishing up my degree in Expressive Art as therapy and these topics sound very pertinent to my interests. It sounds extremely interesting, i am currently in Boston returning to India on August 16th so will not be able to attend. But please do let me know if this will be organized in India or even future dates in other locations. Best, Veda
