Path to Love.

Question:
Dear Deepak, I have been spending a lot of time lately working on my own spiritual path to understanding and love, and I’ve found your book The Path to Love incredibly helpful in my trek. I’m in an on-again, off-again relationship of a few years with a woman, and I’ve been trying to silence my ego and love her and accept her unconditionally. However, there’s something that keeps confusing me on this path: When loving someone unconditionally and working towards becoming one with them spiritually, I feel like I have needs in the relationship that are seem impossible to ignore; specifically communication and spending time together. Are these just the ego screaming at me or do these really matter in unconditional love? How do you remain in a relationship with someone that doesn’t want to communicate or spend time with you more than once every week or two? How do you know when it’s time to move on if the person you love and would do anything for doesn’t want to spend time with you or talk to you about the relationship? Any advice would help because I am incredibly confused. Thank you!

Your needs for communication and contact do not strike me as egoistic for someone who is looking to establish a long-term intimate partnership. I don’t think is a question of not being unconditional enough in your love. It is probably a matter of the two of you coming to an understanding on what kind of a loving relationship you want. Perhaps she isn’t ready for the relationship to become deeper or she doesn’t envision your love as growing into anything that is long-term. Or perhaps she would like that to develop, but because of some emotional history or other responsibilities and priorities, she doesn’t feel she can move ahead right now. It seems like you know what you want and are ready for the relationship to deepen. Talk things over and find clarity on where she is at, and whether it makes sense for you two to continue together or not.
