Darkness Before the Dawn.

Question:
Dear Deepak,
It seems that I usually am only able to attain a sense of awareness when I have been to a dark place first. I noticed this since I was about 11 years old. This usually happened after I became deeply depressed about an event, followed by uncontrollable fits of crying for hours. Then, this warm, loving, peaceful feeling would engulf me, and suddenly all of my worries would slip away. Every time this voice would tell me that everything was going to be ok, and that there was nothing to worry about. I would experience this “high” for days or a week, but then of course, my thoughts would eventually sabotage this wonderful experience. Mr. Chopra, please tell me why I this happens, and how I can experience awareness without having to go to a dark place first?
Response:
The loving, peaceful awareness is who you really are underneath the emotional turmoil. It is always there and available because it is your true self. You can experience it though meditation or any process that gets your awareness beyond your mind. This is a more reliable way to connect to your inner Being, instead of the emotional roller coaster that distresses you and then induces a peace and loving response that arises out of exhaustion and resignation. That kind of calm awareness after the storm won’t last as long and become incorporated into your baseline consciousness as the peace that comes from daily meditation.
