Can There Be a Science of Consciousness?.
When your mind and heart are truly open abundance will flow to you effortlessly and easily.
By Deepak Chopra, MD and Pankaj S. Joshi, PhD
Although it takes place outside the headlines, even those that deal with science, a heated debate is occurring about mind and matter. On one side is a camp of so-called physicalists, formerly known as materialists, who hold fast to the assumption that any and all phenomena in nature can be reduced to physical processes, namely the forces and the interaction between objects (atoms, subatomic or elementary particles, etc.) — these are the building blocks of the universe. On the other side is no single camp but a mixed assortment of skeptics who hold that at least one natural phenomenon–the human mind–cannot be explained physically through such methods.
When one explanation (the physicalist) is supported by the weight of highly successful theories in physics, biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience, and the other side has no accepted theory on its side, the debate seems totally unequal. But in David versus Goliath battles, be careful of rooting for Goliath. The possibility of a science of consciousness, which would involve a thorough explanation of mind and how it relates to matter, can’t begin until the obstacles in its path are removed and old accepted assumptions are overturned.
That has already begun, on all fronts. In physics, the essential problem of how something came out of nothing (i.e., the big bang coming out of the quantum vacuum state) stymies cosmologists, while at the microscopic level the same mystery, this time involving subatomic particles, emerging from the virtual state, is equally baffling. In biology the prevailing Darwinism cannot explain the quantum leap made, with astonishing rapidity, by Homo sapiens in terms of reasoning, creativity, language, our use of concepts as opposed to instincts, tool-making, and racial characteristics. We are the offspring of the newest part of the brain, the cerebral cortex, and yet there is no causal connection between its evolution and the primal Darwinian need to survive. This is evident by the survival of a hundred primate species lacking a higher brain, reasoning, tool-making, concepts, etc. Finally, in neuroscience and biochemistry, there is zero connection between nerve cells, and their chemical components, and mind. Unless someone can locate the point in time when molecules learned to think, the current assumption that the brain is doing the thinking has no solid footing.
The day-to-day work of scientists isn’t dependent on explaining how mind arose in the cosmos–not yet. The relation between mind and matter has existed in philosophy for centuries, and working scientists don’t consider philosophy relevant to their research. Collecting data and doing experiments needs no help from metaphysics or philosophy. But when you look at the unanswered questions in physics, biology, biochemistry, and neuroscience, it’s more than a coincidence that all, without exception, impinge upon the same inability to know how consciousness actually works. By taking for granted the obvious fact that it takes a mind to do science, we’ve reached the point where science is leaving out the very component that might answer the questions that urgently need answering, not because philosophy demands it but because science does.
The sticking point is physicalism itself. If everything must be reduced to the smallest units of matter and energy, and yet there is zero evidence that mind follows that pattern, it is unscientific to cling to physicalism. Even a staunchly mainstream physicist like Stephen Hawking has commented that reality doesn’t necessarily match the current models in science. The mind is real, and since that’s true, defective models are required to change or even be thrown out. To repair the most glaring defect of all–our inability to explain mind–imperils all the sciences for the simple fact that science is a mental activity. If we set physicalism aside, what would be another starting point for a new model of reality?
Instead of conceiving reality from the bottom up, moving from tiny building blocks to larger and larger structures, one could do the reverse and create a top-down model. In other words, the starting point would be the whole, not the parts. So what do we know about reality as a whole?
- Reality is knowable through the mind. What humans can’t know, either directly or by inference, might as well not exist.
- What we know is tied to what we experience.
- Experience takes place in consciousness, nowhere else.
- Experience is at once boundless and very restricted. The boundless part lies in the human capacity to create, invent, explore, discover, and imagine. The restricted part revolves around the setup of the brain, which is confined to the behavior of space, time, matter, and energy. The brain is four-dimensional, while physics poses the possibility of infinite dimensions at one extreme and zero dimensions at the other extreme.
- Because the physical processing done by the brain works in parallel to the mind doesn’t mean that the brain is the mind. To assert that brain equals mind involves showing the atoms and molecules can think, which can’t be proven and seems highly unlikely. Therefore, the ground state of reality, the place from which everything originates, is consciousness.
- Consciousness is the only constant in human experience that can’t be removed from consideration in science, or any other form of knowing.
- What we call reality “out there” is constructed in our own awareness. These constructs follow predictable paths according to mathematics, logic, the laws of nature, and so on. But this doesn’t prove that reality is independent of our experience, only that consciousness is capable of extremely precise, predictable organization. In a word, the notion that everything is a mental construct is just as valid as the notion that everything is a physical construct. The two are merely different perspectives.
- If reality “out there” is a construct dependent upon consciousness, explaining the universe entails explaining consciousness. Where physicalists are stymied by how atoms and molecules think, non-physicalists are stymied by how mind creates matter.
- This impasse is broken by taking a concrete approach to mind; that is, by investigating the qualities of reality “out there.” These qualities, such as how an object looks, sounds, feels, tastes, and smells, are entirely created in consciousness. As Heisenberg noted almost a century ago, there are no fixed physical characteristics of an atom or subatomic particle. Everything is built up from the qualities, also known as qualia, that the human mind knows, experiences, and can conceptualize.
- Ultimately, even where nature sucks or emits all matter and energy into or out of black holes and naked singularities, either through classical or quantum physics, the actual
horizon for science doesn’t lie there, or with the big bang, by which matter and energy reappeared in manifest form. The real horizon is where the inconceivable source of mind meets the conceivable phenomena in nature. The problem of something coming out of nothing is exactly the same when the cosmos was born as when a thought is born. This is the level playing field where mind and matter can be investigated as two sides of the same process: consciousness interacting with itself.

Pankaj Joshi is a theoretical physicist and Senior Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai India. Professor Pankaj Joshi has published many (more than 170) research papers, and monographs on cosmology and gravitation. He has made fundamental contributions on gravitational collapse, black holes and naked singularities. The new analysis on collapsing stars from Joshi and his collaborators, as reported and reviewed in his Oxford (1993) and Cambridge (2007) monographs, showed that both black holes and visible naked singularities form when massive stars collapse at the end of their life-cycles. Recent results from Cambridge, Princeton, Perimeter and others, now corroborate these results.
His research was published as an International cover in “Scientific American.” He served as an adjunct Faculty with the New York University, and was awarded the A C Banerji Gold Medal and Lecture Award by the National Academy of Sciences, India, along with many other awards. He holds visiting faculty positions in many reputed universities and has won fellowships in various scientific academies. His research papers and monographs are widely cited internationally. His recent book, The Story of Collapsing Stars (Oxford University Press), explores the death of massive stars and the subsequent formation of black holes or naked singularities through gravitational collapse of stars.
Well, there already is, it's called religion. Believe me, I am not kidding. Even though, I believe that every religious Hymn, every mystical composition, every mythical story, and all religious parables are factual statements about what consciousness is, but, they are not well understood and are not comprehensively compiled into one story. If we look closely and analyze even a few of these compositions, we can easily compile a testable scientific theory of consciousness. Let’s do that right here. Note: I am going to state only the translation of some of the pertinent religious Hymns, based on my own analysis, without quoting the actual Hymns. Consciousness is singularity and multitude at the same time, and pervades everything that we can see or imagine, Wherever I see, I only see consciousness. Material Universe is a lovely hologram, to which our mind is firmly attached, But, there are only a few who can contemplate this fact. All of the material universe is the made of the fundamental particle, All of Consciousness is made of the fundamental particle, There is nothing that can exist without the fundamental particle. Just like a single thread can hold thousands of beads, Consciousness is the common thread that holds the entire universe together. Just like the water waves and the foam bubbles in an ocean are not separate from the water, So is everything in the universe, material and intelligent, a construct of the fundamental consciousness. We have understood this dream state, this holographic universe as real, But for those who have desired to know, and have put an effort to connect to the fundamental consciousness, Instantaneously understand that none of this is true. Nam Dev states that all this is the construct of consciousness, Contemplate it in your mind only once, and you will see that consciousness pervades everything. What I take from this Hymn is that the fundamental particle that everything in the universe is made up of, is conscious. This fundamental particle manifests itself in two distinct forms 1) that creates physical matter 2) that creates intelligence. When it manifests itself as physical matter, it is multitude, and when it manifests itself as intelligence, it is a singularity. The Meaning of the word "Religion" is: “support structure”. Dharma - the Sanskrit word for religion, has a root DHAR, which means support. So, the consciousness (the fundamental particle) that holds the entire universe connected, is the support structure we call Dharma, or Religion. Let us analyze the next Hymn to understand this clearly. As a firm base stone is the support for my washing board, so is consciousness for me, I am a poor, helpless being, consciousness is my support structure that keeps me alive, So were you the support of saints and prophets. You are as present with me as a dedicated concierge. You are like a relentless river, you are the giver of life, you are boundlessly rich in your giving. You are the only one who can give and take, and there is no one else. You are the giver, and you are the account holder, what can I say? Nam Dev states that consciousness is the merciful lord of all life. The fundamental particle is conscious, and it interacts with physical matter (life) through intelligence. We are intelligent because whatever happens in the physical world, is relayed to the consciousness in our mind through intelligence (electrical signals), and interpreted by the singular fundamental particles present in our brain. The properties of consciousness are stated here in another Hymn: Created by the Big Bang, Consciousness (singular) is the creator of life, It dose not share any emotional properties with life, it is beyond any scientific investigation, it is indestructible, does not share any physical properties with life, It is created from the self, It is the blessing bestowed upon all living organisms because of which they live. It was in its purest form before the beginning of time, It was in its purest form at the beginning of time, It is in its purest form today, and it shall remain so forever. To construct a comprehensive theory of everything in the universe, we have to think of just a few ingredients now. We have to think of a fundamental particle that is conscious, and can manifest itself in two ways - to create physical matter, as well as intelligence. That is it! Once we do that we can explain everything in the universe without a problem. Let’s suppose that in the beginning the space was filled with numerous conscious particles of the same kind. These particles were conscious of their existence, but did not know where they came from, what the purpose of their existence was, and they did not know the nature of space they existed in. They could communicate with each other instantaneously, even at cosmological distances. They wanted to find out the answers to their questions, but they had very limited options They were like very small spongy balls, with an even smaller, dense ball inside. There was nothing much they could accomplish, but they decided to exercise their only option. They decided to form billions of colonies, and each and everyone of them decided to split into two, thereby ejecting the tiny dense ball from inside. The tiny balls were now strongly attracted to the spongy balls, but they were never able to form a permanent bond with them unless the two sponge balls joined together again, which is not going to happen until the very end. Let’s call the spongy ball protons, and small denser balls - electrons. The properties of these two particles are as follows: Protons are like sponge balls, they are conscious, and willfully act in any way they want. Protons do not attract or repel other protons, but they do attract electrons, and contract and expand based on the their proximity to the electrons. Electrons are strongly attracted to the protons, and strongly repel other electrons. This is all we need to construct everything in the universe. The objective of each and every fundamental particle in the universe is to find out who they are, where they came from, and what the nature of space they exist in, is. Each and everyone of the billions of colonies of the fundamental particles formed their own universe, and all the protons in every universe coalesced at the center forming a ball, and all the electrons surrounded them in a huge electron cloud. The electrons exerted tremendous pressure on the protons at the center. The protons were compressed in a very tiny space, until they could not be compressed anymore. It was at that time that they blasted out in a Big Bang. Four distinct things happened at the time of the Big Bang: The chunks of protons were thrown out in all directions, the electrons instantaneously surrounded these chunks, and the matter began to form on these chunks of protons. A lot of protons were dispersed throughout the electron cloud as individual protons and single electrons were attached to them. Small chunks of protons were thrown out of the electron cloud into space where there were no electrons present. Bulk of the protons and electrons remained on the center where the Big Bang had happened, and matter immediately began to form. This is where the Earth formed. The protons that were thrown out of the electron cloud formed what we call stars, and our Sun. The protons that were dispersed as single protons, along with the attached electrons formed the medium for intelligence. The rest of the big and small chunks protons formed physical matter. Earth formed at the center. Each and everyone of the universes has an objective to create such intelligence that consciousness can use to solve its fundamental problem. To achieve this, it is imperative that each universe create life, and a living being with massive enough brain to process enough data. To achieve this objective each and every universe goes through cyclical creations and destructions until it can achieve its objective. What we see today is the result of an evolutionary process, not only of the universe through universal cycles, but several other evolutionary processes within each universal cycle - the prominent of which are evolution of life, and evolution of Human mind. Based on this fundamental theory we can explain everything that we see and don't see, in the universe. All the Big Questions and Hard Problems of science and religion can be easily solved. These are some of the lingering questions that science and religion has no answers for, but can be easily answered with this theory: What is the nature of Light? What is Gravity? What is Mass? What is Force? What is Energy? What is Magnetism? What is Electricity? What is Electromagnetism? How was life created? Why human species is the only advanced species on Earth? What is Intelligence? What is consciousness? Who is GOD? What is Religion? What is Quantum Mechanics? Why is there something rather than nothing? The answers we cannot a have with this theory are: What is the nature of space? Where the fundamental particle came from? What the purpose of the fundamental particle’s existence is?
