Question:

Hi Deepak, I am from India and I am working as a software engineer for the past 4.5 years, upon graduation I could not get a Job for about 1 year, so I had to fake my experience of 1 year, based on that I got this Job, although I am good at my work but somewhere deep down I feel guilty that I had to resort to such an act and that guilt is killing me day to day and hitting my conscience and is affecting my personal life. Please help Deepak. I know I can’t change the past but this is something I have to live forever. How can I get rid of this feeling and concentrate on the present.

Response:

Since you have been doing the job competently  now for four and a half years, it is safe to say that you are really were competent enough to do the work. If you have a good relationship with your supervisor, and you know the company really wants to keep you, then have a candid discussion with him or her and explain that you didn’t really have a year experience in this field before you started, but you knew you could do the job and felt you wouldn’t be considered for the position without experience. Tell them that it’s been bothering you and you just wanted to clear your conscience. This really isn’t such a big deal and they will probably tell you that it is not at all uncommon. You didn’t lie about your university degree so your academic qualifications are accurate. Once you have explained your situation, you should feel unburdened and can move ahead more freely in your life.

Love,

Deepak
