Enough Sleep.

Question:

Hi Deepak, My question is regarding sleep. I know a good night’s rest is considered to be 8 hours. For the past year or so it has been very easy for me to sleep between 9-11 hours each night. I have always enjoyed going to bed early, around 9:30 each night, I set my alarm for 5:30 and don’t want to wake up when it goes off, the days I do wake up at this time I feel sluggish all day. If I shut the alarm off and allow myself to sleep without an alarm I can sleep until 7:30 or 8, I feel more energy throughout the day when I wake at this time. Is this just a bad habit that I need to break or is sleep what my body needs? I should note that this sleeping habit has only happened since I graduated college a year ago. In college I was lucky to get 5 or 6 hours of sleep a night. Thank you for the advice!

Response:

It sounds like you have a balanced sleep routine where you get to sleep early without a problem. And it seems you have tried to wake up early after 8 hours of sleep for long enough for the habit to take hold if that was all that was needed. So I would have to say that at least for now, your body still needs those 9-11 hours. If your schedule can accommodate it, then stick to it until your body tells you it needs less.

Love,

Deepak
