Ask Deepak

Cruelty to Animals.

Quote.

When your mind and heart are truly open abundance will flow to you effortlessly and easily.

Question:

My heart bleeds when I see innocent animals and birds being slaughtered every day to satisfy the cravings of people who are non-vegetarians. Is there any spiritual rationale behind this cruelty?

Response:

Of course, there is no spiritual value in being cruel, as you know already. The practice non-violence, or Ahimsa involves outer things like abstaining from eating meat, if that is your choice, but the deeper meaning of ahimsa involves the absence of violence from the mind, from which cruelty springs. To rid yourself of all violence in the mind means exposing all of our judgments against others and yourself.

To be free of judgment would mean that you do not judge against those who eat meat. In your mind vegetarians are good people and meat-eaters are bad people. I hope you can see that this attitude puts you in the grip of duality, the very thing Ahimsa is meant to free you from.  Deeper consideration is called for on your part.

Love,

Deepak
