Perfectly Imperfect Parents - Identity

Category:  Perfectly Imperfect Parents

Childhood is perhaps the most fluid and flexible time of life, when kids are discovering who they are and playing with identity. The hosts discuss ways parents can facilitate this exploration, while dealing with issues like sibling order and experimentation.

  • What is Perfectly Imperfect Parents? I love you Deepak, but I have to say I totally don't believe in birth order stereotyping !!! Every moment is a new moment. Every child is born into a new universe. We all change and grow as time passes. This is how our children are different from one another.

  • Thank you for sharing! There are so many variables in the family dynamic that can affect a child`s identity formation that it`s hard to pin-point any behavior on one specific situation. It`s really interesting that you were the third born but also had experiences very similar to a first born or only child.

  • Don`t feel like you have to force them into any particular activity or thing because trying to make them fit into any certain mold because that will only make them pull away more. If their only apparent interest is video games (which is common among young boys) try signing them up for art classes or even computer programming where they can learn how to create their own video games. Not to mention it gets them started early on a potentially lucrative career choice.

  • Thanks Mallika & company. Re: tools to help your kids find their own identity, I`m having some struggles with that. Not really knowing how to help them, or what some tools might be? Other than exposing them to many different activities, and asking them lots of interesting questions that initiate conversation.Any suggestions would be welcome. My kids don`t show any obvious signs of what interests them, or what excites them, other than video games! which I limit 1/2 hour/day. They are 7 & 10.

  • very nice talk, enjoyed it. I am the third child, and my two older siblings were out of the house when I started Kindergarten. I felt some of both roles; of the third child, and some of the first child. I had older siblings, but very little contact with them. I did associate with those roles, but ended up not defining myself by them. I know there is some scientific research out there regarding this topic. Good talk!

  • Hi recognize myself in the pediatrician, as an opinionated and knowlegeable person but also a little bit arrogant and very full of herself and her knowledge. I used to be like that! I think the other lady and Mrs Chopra are more authentic so I end up paying more attention to them. I have been learning with these programs how one achieves more one´s goals if we hear more and are less opinionated. But I like it a lot! Great job!!

  • I like the vid. Agree with some, but not all. Mallika seems more understanding than the other 2 woman, but they are speaking from their own personal experience. Unconditional love is how I deal with my kids identity. God bless.
