Social Networks and the Global Brain | The Rabbit Hole

Category:  The Rabbit Hole

Deepak Chopra takes us to the inner workings of the global brain, molded more and more by technology and social media. Social media plays a major role in global culture, through political campaigns, social movements, and personal relationships. How we choose to use it will impact the direction in which our global brain evolves.

  • Global Brain yes, as an infinite source to choose from, exactly what YOU need in the moment. We are ONE but we all have the right to express this in our own uniqueness. The Internet is a learning school, like say a teacher, or perhaps a parent but take care that you do not loose your own individuality!

  • Depak Chopra is a brilliant man and a prolific author/blogger. However, while social media may connect people together in what he refers to as a global brain (the noosphere) it does not connect us in socially engaged behavior that lessens what global expert on the brain`s ventral vagal system Dr. Stephen Porges refers to as `surveillant vigilance`. Attuning to others and sensing into the real essence of social engagement is what makes us care for each other and to pair bond in deeply satisfying interpersonal connection. On line interaction is neither safe nor is it honest simply because the so called connections are made in the void of cyberspace. I have been witness to more abuse on line than ever would happen face to face because the non-human isolation factor gives those with thwarted fight in their nervous system a portal that is much easier to go pathological with and say hurtful things. The real brain connects through neurotransmitters, hormones and peptides such as oxytocin and the natural opioid reward system. Nice sentiment but not based on the latest research in neuroscience. • He doesn't seem to have taken into account that although social networking means we can communicate easier and quicker there is also an element or isolation introduced. People don't physically interact as much and unfortunately our brains are wired in such a way that we value our body over our minds. So because we can see the suffering and oppression of other people around the world we (generally) feel disconnected from it as it is no imidiate threat to us or our environment. Awareness doesn't lead to empathy, it's more reasonable to suggest empathy is due to pressures in the imidiate environment.

  • And what about the nations or the people that have no social networks because of their poverty? Are they excluded then and are social networks only for the richer nations and people ....do we leave these people and nations behind us then?

  • A global `we` is being formed due to the power of social networks. Deekpak says a community of humanity needs to be formed as a result. He suggests that this may be happening already. I agree with him in that a community of humanity is forming - my hope is that the traditional institutions and wealthier nation states embrace and facilitate this change - from the local to the global based on the few things that unite us as people. Not sure if they have the balls to take on the challenge though - we`ll see.

  • Not social networking per se... but faster communication which means faster synopsis and a quicker story line of the human experience. We are exponentially moving into the future at faster and faster rates because of speedy information. What would have been a ten year phase of social history has turned into a five year phase....and it gets shorter and shorter....but where are we headed? What is the end game, or is there? Suffice it to say, we are getting there faster. And right on schedule at the same time. :-) The paradox of our existence.

    Mark William Macco // 2013-08-27 21:24:38 // //
  • The "rewiring" that happens within the individual's brain in response to its development or experiences within an existing environment (such as this modern information age) are not biological evolution. Evolution is something that takes place between generations on the species level. What Chopra is implying here; that the changes that take place within our brains due to stimuli are in fact "evolution" at work, is basically Lamarckism; the idea that acquired traits can be passed on and result in adaptation in subsequent generations. That idea was disproved by Darwin’s theory of natural selection and hasn’t been seriously believed in sense. Computers have only existed for 60ish years; they’ve only been a major day to day influence in Homo-sapien’s lives for decades, if that. There is absolutely no way that we as a species could be “evolving” in any noticeable way to an environment (this technology) that has barely even begun existence on the geological timescale. To the extent our brains adapt and rewire themselves in response to these technologies they are doing so in ways that we have evolved over the previous millions of years, not decades. The brain is made to be able to conform itself to certain situations; this is a natural part of how it has evolved to develop. What this is NOT is evidence for any type of evolution that has been happening recently; there is just no possible way that such could manifest so quickly, as anyone who understands what evolution is would know.

  • well, i hope so, but I'm no less confused or isolated on a holiday or when i am sick still (maybe more so because i see other people earning a living and having fun and i can't) or any more able to help a little old lady fallen with her walker on the side of the road collecting cans to survive hundreds of miles away- just cry for her is all i can do...but i guess farmville was kinda fun at one time. peace

  • Global Brain yes, as an infinite source to choose from, exactly what YOU need in the moment. We are ONE but we all have the right to express this in our own uniqueness. The Internet is a learning school, like say a teacher, or perhaps a parent but take care that you do not loose your own individuality!

  • Beautiful. I agree too. However, our internet is governed. We are not allowed access to all countries, nor are other countries always allowed into our databases.
