Perfectly Imperfect Parents - How to Be Present As a Parent

Category:  Perfectly Imperfect Parents

So many parents in today's world feel stressed and overworked. What does it mean to "be present" as a parent, and how can often-stressed moms and dads go about achieving this balance?

  • I`ve watched a program about Danish community housing where parents described what a huge relief it was to share chores with everyone else, how much free time they all had for being with themselves and each other, for playing, etc. People around the world have made many attempts to gather in communities. Upside: possibility for more joy, friendship and ease. Downside (or upside too?): Personal views on parenting and everything else may differ, sense of ownership of one`s children is challenged.

  • I agree with the lady in the black. Most mothers are confined to their work schedule and it is the worst position to be in especially for single parents. I absolutely agree that parents need to take care of themselves first in order to take care of everyone else.

  • I find it interesting that `balance` is always achieved by the mothers and it usually involves giving up some aspect of your life.

  • Feeling compassion for all stressed out parents out there. Have been one myself when the kids were small. It might have helped to know that it won`t last forever and I can surrender to being present with them and enjoy while the experience fills my life. Before having the first child, most parents are very focused on their own (professional) goals and the change can be confusing. Children grow faster than we think and the day comes when we have matured and it is time for the next phase of life.

  • community housing.. developed in Denmark is based on the belief that children need hundreds of parents... maybe for the USA this is a good idea given the amount of travel and separatedness (sp) and lack of good health, and ageism which the american culture seems to propagate... // my french culture is very similar to your indian culture. we do not question helping our family regardless of family rivalry.
