Holy Facts - Sex and Religion

Category:  Holy Facts

Sex and religion - let's just say "it's complicated." Gotham Chopra discusses the many ways sex has been treated in spiritual traditions - from the Kama Sutra to total celibacy. Does religion play a part in your sex life? Or vice versa?

  • Growing as Muslim middle eastern , I missed a lot sex wise ..I was thinking its guilt to enjoy loving or making sex even of halal as we name it wife and husband , till I reached 30 years old and got separated from my husband ,now am 44 and came to know of tantra sex ....

  • I grew up Muslim and abstinence was drilled in my head; now I look at it as a spiritual experience and tantra appeals greatly to me. Sex can simply be pleasure too, but it way more than that since it is the seat of procreation and orgasm is mystical experience and a unique sacred experience of Divinity

  • @star5doll well said couldn`t agree more I felt the same growing up as a Christian. But now that I`m awakened sex seems natural and shouldn`t be suppressed. :)

  • Growing up Mormon I had tons of guilt. Now after spiritual awakening I feel like it`s more about what you feel and having the clear conscience that you`re not hurting anyone. Being truthful to yourself and good intentions is my personal religion.

  • i like the temporary marriage- bc 1 can be separated and reunited and separated & reunited & separated etc..w the same person LOL!! note: i`m sure you know this, but there is a double standard and men can be virgins too, yet we don`t see much reverse symbolism LOL & rituals or traditions.the jewish faith and most asian faith traditions do not put much guilt into the whole sex thing, in my view. especially in the shinto tradition, where they celebrate fertility w 100+men carrying penis thru shrine

  • Please make sure to give out CORRECT information. No where in Islam is "temporary marriage" allowed, that may be a part of peoples culture. A lot of people see these videos, its not good to tell them something false.

  • I Love Richard Dawkins. I Just couldn`t take the visual. Sorry Mr. Dawkins. Oh I do Love Mr. Dawkins I am not a atheist. I tried and failed. I found The so called missing link to be a Chasm. Although I do not know where I fall in a religious label? Maybe that is a blessing in itself. Ur ?. I was young I made a mess of things. As I Matured I let my inner self be my guide. This has pitfalls, like lying to oneself etc. So I would view my actions from the outside in. This helped me see who I am.

  • Yes, i have reconciled my faith with my sex life. but I am not of any dominant religion as i have found organized religion in general to be askewed and dangerous to my spiritual life. The influence of other people`s attitudes or perceptions can be very detrimental. I believe in the sacredness of the universe and have deep respect for the ongoing mystery we embrace everyday as we live in this world. I believe that sex is a very profound interconnection between two people and is not just an exchange of body fluids for immediate gratification. I have never been able to dismiss sexual interaction as just something for enjoyment and nothing else. Yes, it certainly is for enjoyment, but something else also takes place that i have yet to hear very much elaborated in a non-moralistic, deeply insightful way. I was hoping to hear that on your short video.

  • Some would call me an atheist, though I don`t spew out such rigid terms about viewpoints as nonchalantly as others. Staying away from massive indulgence in sex has lead me to a healthy, disease-free, lifestyle.

  • I have found Love to be the Universal Religion and language. When all is said and done all things done from the Love flowing from your heart are pure. Enjoy the journey. Thanks for posting the series. Social standards and conditions/traditions usually are not based in heart centered Love.

  • This segment by far My Most favorite On Youtube !Religion is a by product human nature which intrigues me profoundly. We are such strange and wonderful Monkeys !I find the sexual oppression many religions impose exasperating .I think it was and in some places still instrumental in the In equality of women. I think sexual power is part of being a women and what fuels our fertility .When you look at countries where woman are more equal you will see it is where woman have more sexual freedom

  • `The idea of temporary marriage in islam` which you chose to talk about is not `ISLAMIC`, this has more to do with tradition, culture. A book which says `` lower your gaze and guard your modestly` (Surah Noor Ayat 30) and `And let those who do not find the means to marry keep (themselves) chaste until Allah enriches them out of His grace` Surah Noor Ayat 33) can never sanctify such a practice. There is no place for this in Islam. And Iran is not exactly the best place to look for an example!
