Ask Deepak - Why Does God Allow Evil

Category:  Ask Deepak Videos

If God is good and all-powerful, then how can there be evil in the world?
Deepak Chopra weighs in on this timeless question that has eluded human beings throughout the history of religion.

  • We have been given a wondrous environment which simply takes on the shape of our dreams individually and en masse. If only the "good" experiences were projected we would never come to the realisation that all physical phenomena are the result of mental energies expressed as thoughts and feelings. The earth is a learning plane so to speak. Humans simply are not taking responsibility for themselves and seem to take delight in assigning experiences to a capricious God and on the one hand and a malevolent Devil on the other. It is time for the human race to step beyond fairy tales of our existence. WE are creating our Heaven and Hell. And God,with unspeakable compassion, assists with our choices. .

  • Simple solution: don`t teach them, let them all find out by themselves.... Cause like seasons will show growth one step at a time, human life time is the same: growth only comes one step at a time. There are forces in nature but we cannot force growth in ourselves.....

  • My personal feeling is that one must always remember that the Bible (and all spiritual books) were written by human beings who are not infallible no matter how well intended. What I have found through my journey is that you must follow what your spirit tells you is right, as long as you are virtuous in your personal practice who`s to say what the "correct" way is...don`t let society/dogmatic institutions try to force you to follow a path that doesn`t feel right for you! :)

    // 2013-04-20 03:44:42 // //
  • That I should attend church, bible school, etc...after an extensive search that began at the age of 13, I found through spiritual experimentation that the Buddhist path was the one that fit best for me. As far as my experience with Christianity, I have a memory from a childhood discussion with my grandmother who said "Did you know you could prove either side of an argument right by using verses from the Bible?" Now at a young age I found this to be a fundamental problem.

  • I know you meant this question for Deepak directly, but I feel somehow compelled to upbringing is somewhat similar to yours: I grew up in a home, not of atheists, but parents who believed that when I was old enough to understand spirituality I could pursue whatever path I felt was best (for this I feel very fortunate). However, growing up in a very religiously conservative area of the United States my parents and I both received pressure from friends and family (who intended well)

  • Deepak, quick question...if "restricted consciousness" is the root of suffering, would not the suffering be a symptom rather than the root of evil...the only reason I ask is because as I`ve grown on my path, sometimes a fair amount of suffering and resistance ensues until I`ve grown beyond the lesson. Would the suffering be merely a symptom then? and would it also be fair to say that the evil more lies in being blocked from growth? The reason I ask is as is that from observing the history of lives of people like Christ, Buddha, Ghandi its hard not to notice that they all suffered a fair bit. And while evil may have been the cause of that suffering, the suffering seems to be more part of the sacrefice of striving. I`ve also notice that many people I`ve known who overcame much suffering in their lives (not those that choose to stay stuck in it), tend to be some of the most compassionate people I`ve known. Wouldn`t it be fair to say that suffering, when it`s not extended or drawn out, can be veiwed as something to be expected as a sign of growth...just curious for your feedback. Blessings :)

  • You`ve already completed the first step by having compassion rather than consuming yourself with hate or vengeance. We all feel hopeless in the face of these tragedies, because no one single person can cure the world of evil or cowardice, but we can do small things. Donate blood at your local blood bank, give food or blankets to a shelter, donate to the Red Cross if you are able. Small deeds by everyone accumulate into global change. Thank you for sharing with us!

I felt so broken paying attention to the Boston event (or other global acts of evil), I felt so ignorant if I ignored it, and I felt helpless because I didn`t live in the city centre and wasn`t able to help. • What do you make of the belief that psychopaths are incurable? These people create so much suffering for others...some people believe we should love them back to wellness, others say "run for your life". I believe that we need to create walls to protect ourselves from these people and not try and love them back to wellness as they reabuse those who try who become trauma bonded to them. We create victims of victims. I am open to a more loving solution but no one can give me one.

  • Suffering is a natural paradigm of reality as a transistor for change. Learning, birth, death, exercise, growth/repair of muscle tissue, etc. Most who learn to ride a bike have fallen off at least once. We allow these things to happen until we are ready to accept the challenge and learn.

  • I believe that`s a complex issue. I`ve seen videos where children in third worlds running gleefully in trash pits. They aren`t aware of a higher standard of living so they do not suffer. Similar to how you or I may be content though there are higher realities i.e millionaires. And even more strange are the spontaneous acts of will which can surpass a Diyu such as Shin Dong-hyuk, 23, who escaped a concentration camp in North Korea. Will, perception and consciousness is subjective.

Namaste Deepak-thank for the 21 day meditation , Deanna enjoyed it and was hoping to see Peace from another perspective and it was a nice distraction. unfortunately Facebook is a slum and another example of why the entire world will never unite. too much ignorance is spread from one generation to the next and hatred really does obscure reality. those who crawl out from their rock for no reason other than to cheer for hate need to stay under that rock and under the dictatorship they know and love because it's true.there is nothing in America for you.and you,and you. • Human suffering is one of religion’s most compelling mysteries: Why do the innocent suffer? Why does God permit evil? Is God helpless to act or does he choose not to? And if He chooses not to act, does that mean he is cruel? Or merely indifferent? Vedanta takes the problem out of God’s court and places it firmly in our own. We can blame neither God nor a devil. Nothing happens to us by the whim of some outside agency: we ourselves are responsible for what life brings us; all of us are reaping the results of our own previous actions in this life or in previous lives. To understand this better we first need to understand the law of karma.

The, we can all sleep better at night knowing that there are so many who prefer their screwed up way of life and can't stand up for themselves so they sneak around like cowards and do destructive things like hoosiers.when you bask in knowing that children and women and men who never mean harm to anyone then, you truly are mentally deficient and physically deficient.I get it when I see people who are too stupid to truly enjoy life and go around punishing those who work at enjoying life.Goddess By The Waterfall

  • Our human odyssey is all about the gift of free will. Our test is to thrive in the face of adversity, to find love where it can feel like there is none. There is shadow and there is light - it is all one and the same. We are not separate from the either the light or the dark, we are all that is. I choose at this time to afford deep compassion and love to all affected: the victims, the injured, those that survived but were there to carry this tragedy in their hearts for a long time; for the families of all, for the perpetrators and the government to handle this with nothing but dignity and respect for human life <3

  • If you are on a planet with freewill, there is a choice between good and evil. Some chose evil, some chose good. Some of your thoughts are influenced by media, religion, family, and relationships, but ultimately, you make your decision. If there are choices, there exists good and evil. At the end of the game (life), you get to describe what you learned from those choices. Granted some influences toward your choices are not fair, and tainted, but that will get resolved at some point.

  • The Lord didn't allow this to happen, we did. We are asked by The Lord to draw near to him in prayer, to build a strong and close relationship with Him in every way by any means possible. To follow His commandments, read our bibles, be always conscience of the things we say and do and the things we allow to surround us mentally and physically. Just as The Lord loves and protects, the devil takes it all away. When our minds are not focused on The Lord, then the devil creeps in. This is an act of evil, not of neglect by God. My opinion.

  • Sherri Turner Kite You are right about God giving us a freedom to choose, but what I fear you don`t understand is the bigger picture of things. While we do have freedom to choose, the original choice of departing from God has already been made by the first human pair, Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden. That choice has put their offspring (us) on a new path, one of a learning trough good and bad experience. Had they chose to have God teach them, they and us would have been set on a different path altogether, a path of joyous learning experience with no pain, aging, sickness or, death added in the package.

    Krystal // 2013-03-03 19:47:27 // //
  • in response to nrama; It is popular misconception that we need to experience evil (suffering) to appreciate good. Neither it is true that this is God`s way or, will for us. God is good in every way. He gives all of his intelligent creatures a free will. Humans decided to go their own way, the way of a learning curve. Now, we complain. We can not have both ways, our independence from God and perilous-less learning experience.

    Krystal // 2013-03-03 19:32:54 // //
  • In this world God, does not gives nor does God, take away. Man is subject to man and Man is subject to what he creates. God is whole and would not create states that would or could promote less. If man had lessoned to God we would be lving a Utopia. One of full health abundance and complete, joy. But in order to have that one must want that for others without resistance or judgement. We mirror in our lives what we believe.

  • “Comforts in heaven and we are on the earth, where nothing lives but crosses, cares and grief.” The cross is God taking on flesh and blood and saying – ME TOO. Suffering is in the wind of this physical world; even God bore the brunt when he descended onto the world. So never stop just because we suffer, the journey to the other side is allowed only after great suffering, I don’t think that God has anything to do with it, at least not as the cause of it; it has to do with the way we look at the reality. Actually we are brains behind our own realities and this is the biggest benefaction, we have been bestowed upon- “The Favor of Free Will” by God to make our own conscious choices, without any divine intervention. Yes! We are not bound by Godly laws. Hence our misery and merriment is our creation and God is not blameworthy. Through our karma we create our pain and paradise. As a child we all are taught to act on the set doctrines but when we don’t go by the laws and shape up of our own, we are culpable for life’s good or bad. Similarly, if we do not comply with the laws of God, we are blameworthy, thus we suffer. But our tendency is to turn on to God in the midst of our sufferings putting forth our blame voucher, playing blame game with Him. But we need to know that we all have our own rhythm of suffering. No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. It ministers to our education, flowering of such qualities as patience, faith, fortitude and humility. All that we suffer and endure patiently builds our character, purifies our hearts and expands our soul, more worthy to be called the children of God. Suffering is the challenge, not a disease to be destroyed but an adventure to be accepted. The very endeavor to transcend suffering one arrives at one’s real being. Pain is purposeful, without which there will be no Chrysalis of Consciousness. We should believe no matter whatsoever the world is, it is perfect. It is our real university where we are endowed with the highest degree- “The Degree of Enlightenment.” Buddha, Mahavir, Christ were the qualified students from this university who evolved to enlightenment. The biggest truth is that man suffers most from the sufferings he fears and therefore he suffers more than his prescribed dose. We need to know that suffering such as, death, illness, agony, hopelessness are natural facts of life. When there is life there will be death, there will be distress and there will be disease. Life is a continuous roller coaster ride and we need to be more and more conscious and believe- “Pain is the path to pleasure. It is a popular saying- “Before seeing properly we must first shed our tears to clear the vision. One by one as our layers of sufferings peel off from our being, our true infinite self sparkles. This is the path and process to open up to our true being, bringing the spiritual tsunami; this is the source of the reality of the universe. The longer we abide in the spiritual tsunami the faster we find ourselves, manifesting a rich life, full of depth, meaning, clarity, love and abundance with bliss. This is enlightenment the realization of our true eternal being that is above life and death, who is living, breathing and consciously connected to the universe. Thus our vision of “Who we are” and “our purpose” birth and breathe from our being. Now we believe that, it is always safe to live in our real abode than the rented one. Living in the rented home is a real suffering; we have to pay for it time to time. “I walked a mile with pleasure, she chattered all the way long. And left me none the wiser, for all she has to say. I walked a mile with sorrow and never a word she uttered but oh! The things I learnt from her when sorrow walked with me.”

And God,with unspeakable compassion, assists with our choices. .

  • I agree, but I'd clarify that the same 5 reasons why one person suffers can be at the result of another's suffering. I also agree that the cure is through awareness and actualization of self. However, when someone's through very traumatic events, and those events are continuously highlighted, or placed before you, or twisted back to you....the suffering can only be subdued. Like waves that reach high or not at all...environment can not be controlled. When environment is geared towards making you suffer, is all you can do is manage self to sustain peacefully. Suffering caused by others can be debilitating, and not effective at all. How much awareness we have DOES make a difference, how much faith we have also makes a difference. But some damage is....damage. I feel my environment is designed to be just that.

(save those born into an illness such as schizophrenia etc. That said, I have seen schizophrenics behave better than people without a disorder). It is going to take an awful lot of loving each other and loving ourselves more than greed, hate etc. to re-write this planet. It is going to take a huge dedication to Unconditional Love. Humans who have not REALIZED the I AM that IS are in the void of darkness with fear, greed, anxiety, anger, and misunderstanding. Souls still in the fight~or~flight arena, They chose and were permitted to create a blueprint, and to be born into sharing our earthly physical lives. Thus stating; free will extends beyond physical life. Be aware of DARK SOULS. Labeled EVIL in Christ-text.

  • It is in a world of duality that the search for Truth (God, Love, Being) takes place. In the background is the Question, "Who am I?" Realization is transcendence of sparation into Unity. Here is a song I wrote on this theme: For each hill there is a valley in this world of duality -- for each "in" there is an "out," for each sinful a devout. There are good times and the bad, and the sane times and the mad times. Still so many lives are spent avoiding what the world`s about. There is "youthful" and there`s "aged," times we`re free and times we`re caged. There is black and white and gray; it goes on day after day. And if we will just accept it -- not fight it but expect it, then we`ll find we can be happy when we walk in wisdom`s way.

  • Why does Deepak always refer to some other source like vedanta etc when answering questions.. I`d for once like to hear what HE thinks and NOT what he`s read or studied. With all due respect, I`m not saying that the vedanta is wrong, I would just like to hear his own words.

  • I have worked on social work, non profit, and with mothers who beat their daughters, spit on them, called them horrible names, and allowed them to be molested. These mothers/parents and some people in our society are evil Linda because they enjoy it. They received parenting skills, and therapy. Therefore, you cannot say they were just ignorant.

  • it takes great compassion to look upon another that has harmed you and realize they have done so out of ignorance, even if there was malice in their actions... not knowing the truths of self and unity... the nature of happiness....
