Perfectly Imperfect Parents - Identity
Childhood is perhaps the most fluid and flexible time of life, when kids are discovering who they are and playing with identity. The hosts discuss ways parents can facilitate this exploration, while dealing with issues like sibling order and experimentation.

It's a topic we'd love to cover but couldn't fit in this season because
we'd like a guest with personal experience in raising a child that's gay or
questioning so the subject is handled accurately and responsibly. Hopefully
we'll be able to do it in the future!

can you talk about gay children?

Thank you for sharing! There are so many variables in the family dynamic
that can affect a child's identity formation that it's hard to pin-point
any behavior on one specific situation. It's really interesting that you
were the third born but also had experiences very similar to a first born
or only child.

Don't feel like you have to force them into any particular activity or
thing because trying to make them fit into any certain mold because that
will only make them pull away more. If their only apparent interest is
video games (which is common among young boys) try signing them up for art
classes or even computer programming where they can learn how to create
their own video games. Not to mention it gets them started early on a
potentially lucrative career choice.

Thanks Mallika & company. Re: tools to help your kids find their own
identity, I'm having some struggles with that. Not really knowing how to
help them, or what some tools might be? Other than exposing them to many
different activities, and asking them lots of interesting questions that
initiate conversation.Any suggestions would be welcome. My kids don't show
any obvious signs of what interests them, or what excites them, other than
video games! which I limit 1/2 hour/day. They are 7 & 10.
