Deepak Chopra: 'Every Encounter Shapes Our Identity'

The holistic health guru, 65, has written a memoir, Brotherhood, with his brother, Sanjiv Chopra, a medical professor at Harvard.

What inspired this book?

It was a chance for us to look back at our lives. We were brought up in the same environment and trained in medicine, yet we went in different directions. Every encounter shapes our identity.

As an immigrant, how do you react to something like the Boston bombings? The suspects in that case were immigrants, too.

If that incident influences our policy on immigration, then we’ll miss all the other people who have come from all over and are contributing to the greatness of the United States. You just have to look at the list of U.S. Nobel prizes to see that a lot of the winners are immigrants.

Do you like connecting with your audience via Twitter?

I do. It gives me the chance to interact with people from all over the world. It’s hard to make a contribution in 140 characters, but I try!

Join us for a twitter chat! @ParadeMagazine will speak with Deepak and his brother, Sanjiv, on June 6 at 3 p.m. ET. Use the hashtag #paradechats.

Deepak,\n\nWe met at you event, \"Journey to the Boundless,\" in 1996 in San Francisco.\n\nYou were speaking about how energy goes from the manifested to the un-manifested,\nand back again. You were saying how the word for energy was \"Karma,\" and you said\nif you drink a cup of coffee (karma) and that energy becomes your thoughts, the energy has gone from the manifested to the un-manifested. So, I asked you if you drink a cup of instant coffee, is that \"Instant Karma?\" ;-) Deepak, I have studied and evolved many valuable ideas since we last spoke. How may I contact you now? \nThank you! Aaron Wolfson

Absolutely! but we also have to have a viewpoint that is stable and does not continually shift. Inother words you have to stand for something or you fall for everything
