The dance of Shiva is symbolic of the dynamic forces of creation and destruction, and the harmonious balance of opposites. His four arms represent the four cardinal directions of space, and are symbolic of Shiva's omnipresence. In each hand, he holds a different symbolic object or makes a meaningful gesture. A drum represents the sound of creation. A gesture (Abhaya) means "do not be afraid." A gesture toward the lifted right foot is symbolic of release from the cycles of death and rebirth. Another hand holds a flame, which is the essence of creation and destruction. The small figure under Shiva's feet is the body of the dwarf Purusha (forgetfulness), who is symbolic of man's inertia, the ignorance which must be overcome. The circle of flames surrounding the figure denotes the universe in its entirety.

Divine Light within the human body is defined by the seven chakras. The word "chakra" is Sanskrit for disk, or wheel. It originated within the philosophy of the ancient yoga system of India. There are seven energy centers within the body, each represented here in these colorful cloth banners. Made from 100% rayon hand and batiked in Bali.

Notes from the Artist: My new work is a series of three geometric shapes with a Buddha or Quan Yin in the center. The work has a feeling of elegance and serenity. I deliberately created this because I want to participate in creating a world where all people feel a sense of "all is well." Each of the three pieces are constructed out of poplar. I use acrylic paints employing  a technique of applying many layers of very thin coats - that gives a finish has more depth than usual as you can see down through each coat to the one underneath it. I hand texture each piece.  The triangular piece contains Shakyamuni Buddha or the "enlightened one." He is the essential aspect of Buddha. His presence brings a sense of peace and contentment. While I do construct each piece by hand ---- it is the finishing which take the most time. The texturing may take as much as a full day and the painting sometimes requires as much as 20 coats which can take up to a week. I am a contemporary wood sculptor. I do this because it gives me tremendous joy. When I work I usually become so engrossed in what I am doing that at some point I seem to move into the background and the piece moves to the foreground. I am no longer doing anything. It It is more like it is just happening. I don’t know when this occurs because it seems to happen in no-time. I become present to a vast stillness, which is also tremendously alive. It is the most exciting feeling that I ever have.

I hand texture each piece.  The round piece contains a Medicine Buddha. This Buddha is the aspect which heals all wounds. According to Lama Tashi Namgyal "If one meditates on the Medicine Buddha, one will eventually attain enlightenment, but in the meantime one will experience an increase in healing powers both for oneself and others and a decrease in physical and mental illness and suffering." The round piece can also contain a White Tara. Besides being incredibly beautiful,White Tara is sometimes called the Mother of all Buddhas and she represents the motherly aspect of compassion. Her white color signifies purity, wisdom and truth. Her love heals at the source of dis-ease, bringing health, strength, longevity and beauty.   While I do construct each piece by hand ---- it is the finishing which take the most time.
