Choosing Sin or God

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Dear Deepak, There is a sign in my community that displays prayer requests and spiritual guidance. I see it on my drive to work everyday. Most of the time these sayings are grounding, inspirational, etc. The most recent one says "Sin is choosing yourself before God." I find this one confusing and would love for you to comment on it. Thank you!

Response:

I’ve never been a big fan of the terminology of “sin” as a way of describing choices that are some religions deem wrong. But in a general sense we could say that sin suggests actions that run counter to our spiritual growth or enlightenment. In that light, sin delays our union with God or our self-realization, and can be seen as a choice, even if it is a largely unconscious choice, to pursue one’s ego agenda ahead of one’s spiritual well-being.

Love,
Deepak

  • Anything that we allow to come first in our life becomes our god. Every day we make decisions about who our God is, or what our god is.

  • We are all part of God experiencing himself. If you choose yourself, you are still choosing God.

  • While I respect one`s right to choose, the Bible says. "Thou shalt have NO other gods before Me." (emphasis mine) Whatever we value the most is our god and Our Heavenly Father is a jealous God. I believe that His jealousy is a righteous jealousy that exists because He knows that we are headed for trouble when we look to anyone or anything before we look to Him. I`m not a real fan of political correctness in regard to speaking of God and His plan. I think that believers MUST stand up and be counted. If that means others don`t like us, then so be it. There are things that are much more important than being liked. I believe that loving and pleasing God is definitely at the top of that list. I DO want to respect everyone`s right to decide what they believe for themselves, but, as a believer, I feel compelled to state what I understand to be the truth. We can`t have PART of the Bible and not accept the rest. We can`t make God our genie in a bottle who is just around to grant our wishes and to say what we want to hear. As in any relationship, we MUST take the good with the bad. I think that we, as a society, have lost sight of that fact. God isn`t here to serve us. We are here to serve God and that means that we MUST stand up and be counted. We cannot afford to be wishy washy about what God says if we are to be His TRUE followers. I do thank you for all of your encouragement, Deepak. I just tend to disagree with what I interpret to be your point of view on this subject. Unlike SOME people, I WILL, however, still be following as I believe that you have a right to your views and opinions just as I have a right to mine. That`s the beauty of this country. So, my friend, I say thank you for sharing with us. We are all just really trying to find our way in this world and we may not agree with all that everyone says. One thing that we can know for sure is that we are here together and if God meant for us to live as every man for himself and to never need another person, then we`d all have been born in and live in our own bubbles. That is not the case and even research confirms that we fail to thrive without the contact and interaction of and with others. Thank you for your efforts to make this world a better place and I look forward to hearing more from you. May God truly bless you, my friend! • Let`s see...sin is disobedience to the Word, Sayings, Commandments of God. "You shall have no other gods before me." Ex.20:3 is a command. To put `you` or whatever else before HIM would serve as a god, and thereby = sin. I have sinned because I have done that. I have put job before Him. We must be willing to call sin what it is, confess it to HIM (sorry, no human priest needed) as He is faithful to forgive us of sin. But God is so MUCH more interested in being God of your life, and having you know that HE sacrificed Himself for sin to remember it no more, so that you may have life, [since the wages of sin is most certainly death and all have sinned but HIM] - that it would`ve been better for the sign to have read: "Choosing God before all, is Life." Choosing to make Him first, leads you down a path of confession & forgiveness. God`s focus is not on your sin, as much as it is to Save you from your sin. He desires your focus be more on HIM, and being Saved through your faith & belief in Him, than on your sin.

  • As god is within and trough us it is essential to chose ourselves before "god"in order to be in balance. We are comiting a sin whenever we choose to act against our beliefs and therefore against "god". The hard is to separate our instincts and beliefs from our social "obligations" and be absolutely honest with ourselves and act accordingly to it

  • It is simply doing ourself disservice if we chose something else before God. I also don`t care for the word "sin". Life with God is so much easier. Any time I get busy with life and don`t pray or meditate I pay the price of not being in alignment with the Source. It is like forgetting to eat, no one suffers but me. Sending love. Love you Deepak

In supersymmetry or nonduality or spirituality the choice always comes from your heart which beats nothing but loving energy... by just breathing in and breathing out.... It is as simple as that and that`s what we were aware of when we were kids....

  • The Eternal Word. 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. John’s Witness: The True Light. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. The Word Becomes Flesh. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’”. 16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. John 1:1-18 New King James Version (NKJV).

  • 2 Corinthians 4 New King James Version (NKJV) The Light of Christ’s Gospel 4 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Cast Down but Unconquered 7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death is working in us, but life in you. 13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,”[a] we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you. 15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Seeing the Invisible 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

  • And why make a book about God when you deny sin even exists? You spread lies upon lies to people and then make a book about God? One day everybody will bow down to Jesus Christ and say He is Lord and confess to God. I pray to God The Father that you will know the Lord Jesus Christ and have a relationship with Him one day and know that being born again is the only way to God, in Jesus Christ`s Name I pray, Amen. So you in your conscience know that stealing is wrong and that murdering is wrong. God has written it in our hearts. Have you ever stolen something? Even if it was something small. Or have you ever said God`s name in vain? That is called blasphemy and is a very bad sin. Or have you told a lie? That is a sin as well. Me I am guilty of all these. Everyone has fallen short of the glory of God. Each one of us. Not one person can say they are perfect. Did you know that in Matthew 5:27-28 New King James Version (NKJV) Jesus said, 27 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not commit adultery. 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart."----- So He judges our inner thoughts as well. So God sees sin and can`t touch it because He is Holy. So God is a righteous Judge and has to punish sin and what does that mean you ask. He has to judge us guilty of those sins because He is a righteous Judge. Now answer this please, that if someone murders one of your close relatives and the case against the one who murdered your family member was guilty because the evidence was there to prove it, would you want the judge to send him to prison? I hope you say "yes". So we are guilty and have to face a righteous judge and the penalty is death. But did you know that God did something for us so we wouldn`t have to die and go to hell? By His grace He sent His only begotten Son Jesus Christ and He lived a perfect life here on earth to fulfill the law for us, something we couldn`t do. It`s like Jesus Christ went into the courtroom and told the judge that He was going to pay the fine for us. Isn`t that amazing!!! He took the punishment for you already and it satisfied God that He did that. So all sin was put on Him even though He lived a perfect life on earth. He died on the Cross and was buried and on the third day He rose by the Power of The Holy Spirit and now Jesus Christ our Lord sits on the right hand of God The Father. Those who have faith in Jesus Christ our Lord, meaning to believe and put your trust in Jesus Christ The Lord and repent (turn away from sin), (this can be done by the power of The Holy Spirit) will have eternal life. This is the only way. Nobody else died for sins but Jesus Christ our Lord. Put your trust in Him. Ask Him to help you and He will.

  • Loner, praying to god is good, sometimes he listens sometimes not, it depends what`s good for us. Problems in our life come due to our own actions of past life but challenging god and losing faith in him will only increase your karmic debt so don`t do that. If we start asking god to solve our problems, it means we are in a state of ignorance. God has given us food but he never comes and give the food to needy because it is our job to do. Why god should be our first priority becuase if we will have this feeling "god is first and everything for me" no problems will look bigger and won`t let you take emotional foolish decision in life. Don`t lose faith, god bless you.

  • Gaurav, how can we attain that state of mind and heart when we do not attached to people? I used to worship God day and night, i was so happy past 6 years. then suddenly, I was asked to stay away from the person who me me so happy. That has shattered me and my faith in God has completely vanished. Now I challenge god asking him, if you are there, you will help me sail though this. But nothing helps and the pain grows. How cause of attachment!can one train oneself to remain unattached? The way we are brought up in our families, the environment and the idealistic parental rapport as one grows up forms the basic characteristics of our nature. We can not change it. We can even mold it or adjust also for only those who matter the most to us, Bcoz of attachment.

  • Yes because God created the world and universe and desires us to communicate with him and to love him back. If we put ourselves before God it is all too easy to be self centered, hurtful, and to sin against each other and ourselves. Human nature is to be self centered. I believe we are made perfect but we are born into a sinful materialistic world and we take on negative recordings from family and we forget what is first inside us. Humans need leadership, and when we turn away from God we find something to lead us. We are open to cults and other things. For me I get disgruntled about some churches, the volume of music and sometimes the lack of healing services. I think that churches now are more aware of the damage past churches did to the kingdom and are trying to do better. \

  • Your right the Bible said something like I and my father are one. Sometimes I think it is just awakening to and connecting with that part of the brain so the God is the brain and the Goddess is the heart or in other words the God is the thinking process and the Goddess is the feeling process and both are needed. But this thought bothers me even if it appears right. When all else fails you will likely call for something outside of yourself. I still do. So I think it goes beyond. It is like the light is in you and in everyone and everything and beyond as far as all existence goes and throughout all time. Some days maybe our light doesn't shine as bright as others. I don't know how it all works. I don't even know how to explain it all. Just sharing some thoughts.Oh, and Chopra, then there is the God that scares me and is most terrfying and when you find Him you go straight to Jesus. But I don't know if people have seen Him.... God. I think if they had they wouldn't do half the things they do, but then again I thought I saw him once. Never no one to talk to because they all seem to have their preconceived ideas about who God and Jesus are. Do I know? I don't know, but it is to the point where when someone asks me if i found God and Jesus I want to hit them over the head with the book and then burn the thing. It's not God, Jesus, or the Bibles fault I feel this way though. It is people always getting on my case for supposedly how evil I am. I say if you are going to call me evil go look in the damn mirror.

  • depends on what you are choosing...and what you believe. If you believe in the God of the Bible, and you are choosing to do a good workout on a sunday morning instead of going to church, then no..I don't think that is a sin, since you are suppose to maintain your body as a temple. However, if you are choosing to lay in bed because you are too hung over to get up, yeah, that's probably a sin. lol! I don't believe the bible is entirely accurate, so my definition of sin is probably very different than most people's anyway.
