Whatever You Resist Persist

Category:  Deepak Quotes

Whatever you resist persist. There is the rub. As long as you engage in an inner war between what you crave and what you know is good for you, defeat is all but inevitable. In its natural state, will is the opposite of resistance.
Whatever You Resist Persist

  • The method I have taken up to resolve the inner conflicts (wars), around personal habits in particular, could be thought of as creating a peace pact. It is actually establishing a regimen to follow which disengages me from the habitual pattern of struggling between wanting versus an inhibiting ideal. An example might be the pleasure that comes from eating ice cream. Rather than struggling anytime ice cream may enter my consciousness as to whether I should eat some now because I would enjoy it or resist the temptation because it is “not good” for me, I, instead, follow the regimen I have chosen. If the regimen provides for, let’s say, eating ice cream once per week and I have yet to eat some that week, I can choose to eat it then or plan on eating it later in the week. If I have eaten ice cream already that week, then I simply look forward to next week’s enjoyment, and fully appreciate that I am not overdoing it and reaping that reward. Eliminating the turmoil of being a slave to conflicting desires by becoming a willing and fortunate slave to one’s own creative peaceful resolutions fosters tranquility of mind and rids the heart of low desires.

  • Ideally, Will is a natural state. In reality, cravings take over, most of the times. Craving, longing, day dreaming, etc. make us humane, otherwise we are perfect being.

  • I resist stress and because of that...my job keeps piling more stressful work on me. That`s a lot different from deciding to choose between eating or not eating ice cream. How can I get my overheads to stop piling on so much work that it is affecting my what should be non-working hours?

  • I think temptations are natural and one should NOT resist them as far as possible. Of course, any temptation that are potentially harmful to others - generally defined by law and ethics - are to be avoided, failing which there can be consequences.

  • What if we change our way of thinking so as to not be in constant battle with ourselves, but to look at what we crave in a new light, i.e., look at the craving and tell ourselves that it doesn't taste good and is made of something horrible, etc... Neuroplasiticy allows us to retrain our way of thinking. Thus, instead of constantly fighting ourselves, try something different and change the way we think of the item from the very point where it starts?

  • What I understood from Super Brain: A strong will doesn't mean you resist, but that you examine and observe the emotions and feelings that feed your cravings. By doing this, eventually these cravings will disappear and your will will be n sync with your desires -they alter to something more pure- so fighting them is no longer necessary.

  • Good night all. . . What we generally supress is what we want within. Stress is bound to happen when there s a continuous battle between two of our parts, where a part of us wants us to be someone different from our other part, leaving the temple of God, our own body to bear the brunts and blows. Till we decide between what we actually crave and what is good for our inner self, we will continue to stress ourselves and any attempt, endeavour or pursuit on our part towards anything would get us unavoidable failures, unless we decide on what we want and we pursue it with a strong will. . .

  • I agree. I can say that experientially now. We are having family over today. ALL coffee drinkers as I used to be. My husband makes incredible coffee. I smell it brewing. It still smells wonderful to me BUT I am NOT permitting myself to be ill. I will heal. I prefer to use the word resolve. My will can be weak sometimes, but for me RESOLVE is different. In this sentence, Deepak is right except may I humbly rephrase it this way: In its natural state, resolve is the opposite of resistance. Definition of Will - Intend, desire, or wish (something) to happen Definition of Resolve - Settle or find a solution to (a problem, dispute, or contentious matter). Noun. Firm determination to do something. Re: the coffee (a/k/a "kawfee in NY) ... I resolve to settle for Nettle Tea. :-) Good grief I'm getting too cerebral. Think I'll go watch a funny movie.

  • Speaking of inner war, I just came upon this quote from Dr. William Donkin, author of "The Wayfarers" a book about God-intoxicated souls: "It is important to remember that the average man himself has not really any balance of mind. The average man has only the appearance of balance, because he can often effect a provisional adjustment between the warring elements in his mind."

  • Amber, try exercising some daring by allowing for uncertainty. Real certainty in this world is scarce but there is an abundance of uncertainty. The ignorance of modern society has turned true valuation upside down by valuing what is scarce like precious gems and taking for granted that which the Creator has created in abundance because it is most truly valuable, like air, water, soil, and uncertainty. Certainty is over rated and boring!

  • .That which any person who has walked this Earth has achieved you can achieve with the right mental attitude, perseverance and industry. Limiting thoughts and weak mental images must be banished. One's focus must be on the attainment of goals that are truly important.

  • What u resist persists. That was one of Seth's mantra's from the Jane Robert's books in the 1960's.

  • Ideally, Will is a natural state. In reality, cravings take over, most of the times. Craving, longing, day dreaming, etc. make us humane, otherwise we are perfect being.
