The Importance Of Sleep

Category:  Deepak Quotes

Most people are aware of the importance of sleep, but as a society we don't do what is good for us in this area. We are chronically sleep derived and even proud of the fact. since it indicates a life on the go and total dedication to our work. But the mind platter indicates that true dedication would consist of balancing the brain for optimal performance, which means taking seriously time in, down time, and sleeptime.

  • Sleep is a body-spirit thing. You need as much as you need, and that's going to vary depending on what you are doing with your body and what you are doing as a spiritual being. Everyone's unique, body and spirit, and so each sleep event is different.

  • I am agreeing with you Dr Chopra. I myself is struggling to get my guilty feeling out how much ever less I sleep. There is so much to do and so less time. I am not stressed. I consider myself a spiritual seeker and there is never enough of reading books, listening to the discourses and even contemplate. I sleep less than the recommended and has never felt tired or worn out. I am more worried about the feeling I have that I have wasted 5-6 hours of my precious life time again. I could have possibly use to collect some more spiritual pebbles.

  • It is funny, we are working on ourselves to be more in service to community and not interfering personal spiritual growth through familly relationship, local relationship, intimate live but there is still pressure of the corporational system to shorten our regeneration time. Meditation, physical endurance training, spiritual education, fundamentale ducation on emotional intelligence for relationships but negative side effects of present job corporational system just not able to give up of the pressure. Although all circumstances in world economy and relationships are calling for the change and nature is joining to the club of the invitations to reconsider that panic.

  • Thanks for bringing this very important topic. Unfortunately, the research shows that we sleep an entire hour less than our forefathers did just about 100 years. This leads to weight gain, increased stress and other metabolic and emotional problems. As a practicing sleep and obesity medicine physician, I can say that we need at least 7 hours of sleep and lack of sleep makes us gain weight! W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America

  • Sleep deprivation in the western world most certainly has more to do with environmental factors than it does some obsession with "being on the go". But, as per usual, Chopra will say just about anything to make a $buck. At least in writing this trash he as assured that more people will get sleep - most likely from the absolute boredom in reading it.

  • Thank you Deepak for your free 21-day Meditation Challenge. Excellent meditations by the way. I'm on Day 7 - mind you I've got a choice to make - about when I listen to them. At moment it's very very late at night or early hours instead of going to bed. I know that I should be in bed and get up early to do this meditation I'm doing things 'back the front' at the moment. I've contacted the Meditation page and asked them to send it to my email earlier (6am or 7am) as it does not arrive till afternoon some time. (Australia)

  • I use to go to bed sleepy and lay there wide awake for a good while. I got an Icomfort Savant memory foam bed and a tempurpedic pillow and it feels like heaven. One thing I realized this winter is getting into bed with cold sheets would reawaken me. I got an electric blanket, so it's warm when I get in. I fall asleep now with a minute.

  • I definitely do not get enough sleep and know it. I switch off and ignore my inner voice. It's like the inner child who I think runs the show - is clinging onto control... and does not want change. My inner observer & inner adult know it is what is needed to improve my health i.e. go to bed earlier - drink more water - exercise outside to be out in the sunlight for the Vitamin D. I seem to be turning a page in my mothers book - she knew that smoking wasn't good for her and did it anyway. Couldn't she tell I had to hold my breath whenever I was near her because of the shocking smell. No child/young adult/adult wants to kiss an ashtray. She ended up with a brain tumor & holes in her lungs & didn't have a very comfortable death because of it. Sorry mum ... I did love you ... I just couldn't stand the smell. Now I know there will be health consequences for me too because I'm not listening. Thinking about it, writing about it now the next stage is accepting it and then doing something about it. I have a choice to make.

  • I tend to wake up easily and then have trouble falling back to sleep again. Since I started doing meditation at night, I've noticed I fall asleep deeper and longer and wake up more rested. I still don't always sleep through the whole night but it doesn't bother me like it did before. I find I'm happy with 2 four hour naps or one long 8 sleep period. I'm just going with what my body tells me it needs.

  • I know this is true, yet I deprive myself of sleep many times. Much of the time when I am sleep deprived it is because my mind keeps ruminating over all the stress in my life, preventing me from sleeping soundly. I did sleep in today though, and if felt wonderful!

  • I don't know if this started before I remember, but in the '70's all of the "efficiency" experts started publishing material that encouraged you to get up an hour earlier to get your, exercise, laundry, car washed, whatever. Then came video games. Something in which we receded and have difficulty turning off. We truly need to value the off-regeneration time of sleep.

  • It is very interesting to note that trying to maintain a balance of work, play, and rest is simply inadequate for tickling the ego. Thus, people tend to go in for extreme behavior of any kind that foster ego enhancement. Think of how in our society the aims of seeking contentment and tranquility have become rare. Instead, it is common for folks to wear busyness, stress, and rage like badges of honor.

  • Resting is like recharging your batteries for the mind and body. With lack of rest, comes serious health problems. I love to rest and at least 8 hours of solid sleep. I don't know how people can function on only 3 to 4 hours of sleep but I suppose what is most important to them is making money. They are on the money go round treadmill. That's part of the problem in a capitalistic society where the big whigs up stairs are forcing the working bees to work over 50+ hours per week with little sleep.

  • A balanced life involves tinkering to achieve a bit more or a bit less that one may achieve the "ultimate" goal of "just enough." The basics of life can be thought of as: meaningful work, rest/sleep, and entertainment/amusement. The intention and attention paid to the goal, just enough, prevents the mind from tricking us into giving greater value to one over the other two for any sustained time frame. Life is meant to be simple, and it can be if we are alert to it happening NOW.
