Deepak Chopra: The Mideast Protests, Social Networks And The Global Brain

Category:  Politics

Written by Deepak Chopra, author of God: A Story of Revelationfor www.thedailybeast.com

The future of the Middle East looks like a race between the mullahs and the iPad—and despite recent setbacks, social networks are rewiring our brains to topple traditional barriers.
There’s a fascinating connection between the social network and where the human brain is going. For a long time, neuroscience held a wrong belief—several, actually—about the brain. The number of brain cells we have was seen as a fixed number that declined over time. No one realized that stem cells in the brain can renew lost neurons at any time of life. But the most exciting discovery was that everyday experience rewires the brain.

Even though it looks like a thing, your brain is a process. It is always in a state of dynamic flux. New connections and new cells are being born, and as the rewiring occurs, something astonishing happens. Your personal reality changes. The brain processes reality, and when new pathways are formed, the world becomes different.

We are witnessing a global test of this thesis in the Middle East. The future there seems to be a race between the mullahs and the iPad, between sermons in the mosque and tweets on a smartphone. After the Bush administration’s disastrous invasion of Iraq, the number of cellphones in that country exploded, even amid social collapse. Young people desperate to be part of the wider world started expressing their yearning through social networks. Tweets and texts were critical during the Arab Spring, especially in getting large numbers of protesters to gather in Cairo’s Tahrir Square.

When the moderate, progressive elements in Egypt lost to the Muslim Brotherhood, it seemed like a huge setback for social networks and a massive victory for the mullahs. Yet the long view is far more hopeful. Millions of tweets, texts, emails, and phone calls have one thing in common: they are neural signals in the global brain. A cabdriver talking all day on his cellphone in Manhattan is weaving himself into the society back home, and the more he communicates, the stronger the neural pathway he is creating.

Silent opposition brought down the Berlin Wall because consciousness, although invisible, is incredibly powerful. Social networks have the capacity to swiftly alter the global brain. On the surface, most tweets are small passing events. But stand back a bit, and you see that a new identity is being formed, a global “we” that anyone can participate in. This newly shaped global brain can topple the traditional barriers of religion, tribalism, nationalism, and political oppression.

Before the social network, think of what it took to escape the mindset of a repressed culture. You had to physically move away, plant yourself in a foreign country, and probably continue to fear for your relatives stuck back home. Now, in the darkest hours of Syrian resistance, as in Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt, anyone can send and receive messages from the global brain. As this stream of messages continues, it reshapes the individual brain, too.

What I’m saying isn’t mystical or hypothetical. The destiny of the whole planet depends on reaching beyond the narrow interests of rich nations and multinational corporations. A community of humanity needs to be formed. It’s completely possible for that to happen. In fragile, hopeful ways, it already has.

  • I saw this for myself while in Egypt, Syria, Jordan, India, Morocco - everywhere I went in the world it seemed that above all else everyone had a cell phone and your right it has made it so easy to connect and have eyes all over the world. We are one world one heart and once people realize that the oppression and suppression of the individual is and never was okay then we will have world peace. The world is watching each country and individual human beings are now joining together and say stop no more.

  • For years I have left people puzzled by my success in life. How was I who was born with a very simple mind requiring the aid of my parents to get me started on something. And I had very little affection which was only shown towards the family pets and not my family. I didn`t like people to touch me. It gets worse for the better. A near drowning at age six erases my memory, that little bit of affection gone, however, something else changed too. I wasn`t in that passive mode laying in bed waiting for somebody to get me started or sitting on the floor. I was up walking around and I everything was new to me, the blue sky, tress, plants, insects, birds, everything I found interest in, except people. I had no mental thought process or inner feelings towards knowing fear, shame, humility-somebody making fun of me, apathy, or affection of any sort. There was no remembering anything from the past or to look ahead to prepare. It was all about the moment and nothing more. After the near drowning I was diagnosed mentally retarded and again in 2003 by a clinical psychologist. After, listening to my childhood, he said. As a child I can see you brain was retarded. I`m amazed with your success and I believe your spirit helped you get better. You spirit is perfect and your spirit helped you get better. My psychologist said. I don`t know how you did it. But, you have been able to rewire your brain. Another psychologist was dumbstruck after learning of my childhood and then years alter seeing my present state of mind and that was 8 years ago. I`m on a whole new level. The sad part of this is seeing those around me not growing intellectually and emotionally. Its like they are moving away from it. Taking hold of the moment is like saying, life can`t get any better. Never get stuck on any one thing. Never reflect back on the past, it makes life more interesting the next time round. Be curious about everything. Let curiosity explore your imagination with every activity in your life. Don`t expect things to be a certain way. There isn`t any wrong with breaking something. Learn how not to complain by showing an interest that things are going to get better. Show me all your problems and I will show you how to have fun correcting them. p.s. Even my wife of 31 years is amazed and at the same time lost with all my new feelings and emotions I share with her everyday.

  • I really hope that the iPad will beat the extremist radical mullahs! Something tells me though that the mullahs might start using the iPad for their advantage. I’m certain they also each own a cell phone. What you said about the brain changing as a result of social networks was so very interesting. You mentioned nationalism as something damaging, but what about the nationalism of an ancient people like the Assyrians? We are nationalistic because we are the indigenous people of Mesopotamia (Iraq). Our homeland was called Assyria thousands of years ago, but we are now not recognizes in the Middle East and we are oppressed. Much of the West also ignores us and we are being exterminated. Our situation in Iraq has become impossible and thousands of our people have fled the country. Of course a community of humanity should be formed but we should all be included. Thank you Mr. Chopra for this interesting and informative article. By the way in the modern Assyrian dialect “Chopra” means beauty. :)

  • I am so moved by this piece. Like everything else you say, think, and do, this too is full of optimism, truth, and also a direction. I see this move toward better, in science as an example too. I am taken by all the new findings and researches and possibilities. I have a feeling that the inclusion of other medical professionals (from the rest of the world) and their thinkings, and the possibilities that the technology gives them (and us) for sharing, collaborating, and learning, has made it all possible. We should take a leap as a WORLD not as a nation, a leap towards a kinder future that we all deserve.

  • Sometimes I think of how it must have been many years ago when part of your family would take off in a wagon and head for parts unknown. You had no way of knowing where they were or what was happening to them. How awful that must have been especially for mothers who saw their children leave on these `great adventures`. It must have been like a lead curtain coming down. Complete disconnect. How different it is today. How wonderfully different. Dr. Deepak is so right. I hope his vision is realized. I will do my part!!

  • We are participating together in the evolution of the soul. This is more than a state of "allowing" as even the act of allowing denotes some control on our part. It is instead, a state of "loving allowance" where the perfection of the universe flows effortlessly for the good of our beautiful planet, humanity and all living things. We are awakening never to slip into unconsciousness again. Great joy!
