Crying in Meditation

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Question: Hello Mr. Deepak Chopra When I meditate my eyes tear up and I start crying. What does this signify as this happens to me all the time and has been going on for over 6 months.
Response:

The crying indicates that there is a deep layer of grief and sorrow that the meditation is working on releasing. Six months is a long time for this to go on, but that only indicates that it is a profound emotional trauma that requires time to heal. It will go away eventually, continue to be patient.
Love,

Deepak

  • I can compare to this. This has happen to me as well. Several years ago I was in juvie. While at juvie we came out to do our rec (exercising time). As we were finishing our excercises, the officers put us on meditation. I usually DONT meditate, but when I did tears came out of the blue. I wipped my tears and went back on my meditatation. And it hahappened again, so I decided on not concentrating on my meditation. But I gatta say I never felt so good, relaxed and peacefull. But it was weird and emotional. But now I understand why. Thanks

  • Me too! I`m glad I`m not the only one. Thank you Deepak for explaining.

  • I`m glad I read this because I sometimes feel like crying during meditation. I was under the impression that meditation is suppose to make you feel happy and connected but if I wanted to cry from hurt, sadness or disappoinment I must be clearly doing something wrong. So I`ve been stopping myself from crying during any meditation that provoked tears and I`ve been doing the meditation challenges with Deepak Chopra for almost a year now. If i feel it next time I`ll just let it happen and see what comes next.

  • Hello Mr Deepak Chopra, Last night I meditated for the first time using isochronic tone stipulations for the pineal gland. Immediately my body started raising upwards from my chest to the shoulders and eventually my arms. I felt as if my soul was raising up and later realized that my mom had witnessed my body shift upwards as she took a video of me. I also kept crying in my mediation, and there was a big indentation around my 3rd eye. Immediately after the mediation i burst out crying for about ten minutes. Is this normal, and what does this mean or symbolize?

  • I used to experience this when we did a meditation at the end of a yoga session. It was usualy when the teacher talked about God loving us unconditionally. I`m not a believer but this thought seemed to bring me deep solace and my tears would slip down my face. I would then feel very disappointed that the session ended because i wanted to stay in that place.

  • I really meditated for the first time and i cried this is amazing because through crying we release emotion, crying is a wonderful thing. I am a very big fan of some beliefs you have Deepak although i find them frightening for those around me religions are so impossible. If you dont believe in one then you`re damned to hell. And i fear athiests for if your theories are a reality then they will only experience what they believe nothingness. I believe you most believe in something more for hope within the afterlife but i must ask you believe that what we expect to happen in the afterlife will be our eternal fate so if i believe i will be lying in a hammock on a beach near palm trees will it be true? Also will our afterlifes be able to expand? If i believe i will end up in heaven can i expand it and also touch down to earth? I find you very inspiring! Also what if you dont know what awaits you after death? What will be your eternal doom?

  • it`s a very strange occurence, as I to have experienced this type of response almost daily for as long as I can remember. I will start weeping or tearing, but without any emotional ties, at least I don`t seem to feel any normal emotions that would be connected to crying, but still cry and/or tear up all the time. It`s like there is a deep connection in me that is coming out, but I don`t sense it in real time or conciously. Any tips to what this can be, or how I can connect to the source of this sorrow. Thx!

  • Me too! But mine were happy tears, because i felt like i found a friend i though had died. Somebody who was there when i was little, will be there when i die, but somehow we`d lost touch. Beautiful.

  • I have been meditating for 30 years. I cry every time. It is completely normal. Many people who meditate cry especially so in the beginning. It is emotional to meditate. We get in touch with ourselves. We get in touch with the Living-Universe otherwise Known as God. We get closer in awareness to God. And to our souls. Forgettaboutit just go ahead and cry. It means that you are doing it Right. These are tears ~ of joy and release.

  • It signifies your need to let out some repressed emotions. Cry as much as is needed, only then will you come to understand why you are crying. Replace it with this mantra "I am whole, perfect, strong, powerfull, loving harmonious and happy. These are the atributes of your true nature which is reflected from your creator the universe. Happiness will soon follow. Xx

  • Thanks Deepak.. I keep finding myself in a deep depression or super funk at least once or twice a month since my Mother committed suicide last June (13th). These episodes tend to happen around this time of the month and seem uncontrollable. I go to treatment, have a positive outlook, and living a healthy lifestyle. Is there any additional advice you can offer to help heal the pain and loss? Sincerely, Ryan

  • When I come up into a wide open yoga stretch, I tear up sometimes. I think it`s because I hold a lot of tension in my shoulders. Exercise gets tension out more quickly than meditation. Meditation is more of a mental release unless you are sitting in an upright, leg-folded posture which increases your flexibility. I love commenting. : )

    Raven Moore // 2012-04-14 18:55:20 // //
  • I wish my eyes would tear when I meditate. I just have chronic dry eyes sometimes.

    Steve Wein // 2012-04-14 18:50:15 // //
  • I had that happen while I was closing my intention at the end of a restorative Yoga class. While in meditation, (corpse position) my eyes were tearing and as I focused on my intention and then my breath, tears kept sliding down the sides of my face. At the moment of release; when I exhaled to seal the practice, it stopped and a wash of relief and calmness overcame me. I knew then how deep the sorrow was for the person I gave my practice/session to. At least I`m aware of the root and can work on it. Some carry pain and have shut this part down inside of them that they don`t even know what ails them. Therapy may be required. Good luck to the inquirer. Namaste.

  • Things like that used to happen to me. It was like finging a safe place to release things and let it all out and let go. That`s what felt like for me anyway. I would then take in some good steady breaths to breath in goodness and purify what`s inside and let the bad stuff out.

  • So nice to see this explained. For a time my eyes seemed to do the same, it was very distracting. I was new, and had questions, but did not receive the right feed back that would just help me to feel confortable in letting it go, letting it be. Know that it is a type of cleanse that your spirit needs.
