Numbness in Meditation

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Hi Deepak, I have been practicing meditation nearly every day now for approximately 6 months (3 months of Primordial Meditation). During this time I have noticed numbness in first my left fingers and now my right. This isn't just in meditation (but that is when I first noticed it) It's constant. I am obviously a bit concerned about this and I am being checked for physiological causes, however, I was wondering if this type of experience can also happen due to meditation i.e. toxic release. I would appreciate any advice you may have on the subject.

Response:

This is not a meditation issue, it is neurological. You probably only noticed it initially during meditation, because your attention to the numbness was not distracted by other sensory experiences. Have your physician do an evaluation and take his or her advice.

Love,
Deepak

  • as well as having some physiological dysfunction there exists a danger called kundalini syndrome when an individual attempts to achieve enlightenment without proper spiritual supervision and over-intensive regimen of meditation without cleansing the congested energy can result in paralysis and numbness neurologically. Try a salt bath for 10 minutes with three cups of salt once a week, or a salt shower with salt gel rubbed on body then allowed to sit, then rinsed off. It may assist de-congesting of aura and chakras particularly throat chakra which affects armpit chakra and arms.blessings, and namaste.

Amor, Deepak

  • I used to get the same thing. It was nerves being pinched in my neck from the posture. Physical therapy took care of it even though a doc wanted me to have surgery. So grateful I listened to my body.

  • Self Mastery (Meditation) Create the following thoughts one after the other: I sit down quietly, feeling calm and relaxed, breathing in and out deeply... distancing my mind from all tensions and worries, remaining free and at peace. All those thoughts that come into my mind at the moment and are not important, I simply let them pass by... I am the creator of my own thoughts... I think about the power of the will. Originally, I was a being free to choose what I wanted, to decide when I wanted it, without influences... Now, I return to that original state, to that inner source of deep peace, self-confidence and power… Now there is a natural intuition and knowledge of what is right. I realize this is what makes me free… I feel relaxed and carefully observe my personality... my character and the life I lead... Am I who I want to be? Does my character correspond to my ideals? Do I lead the life I want to lead? Am I independent? The power to free myself is to be found in my inner self… the capacity to feel like an autonomous being, with a free mind, as peaceful as I desire, as positive as I want it to be. And my feelings are in harmony, free of restrictions, free of influences… The power of thoughts is so great, if I think I can do something the power will be there to do it. If I choose to think positively, I can think positively. If I want to relax my body, I can do it. If I want to be emotionally free, and still be in the world without bowing down to others, I can… This mastery over the self will bring me true freedom… I ask myself over and over again: Am I free? ... Free to create the thoughts, and feelings I want to create, when I want to, as often as I want to, for as long as I want to… I am the creator of my own world, of everything I think and do… -------

  • For dipression nd all negativities which we call disease is actually cn be cured by our own practice because for wat we r depressed is a state of mind nd we hv to remove all those with the help of meditation in the presence of guru or cn say teacher

  • In my experience numbness in the hands and wrist during meditation Reiki happens because you are healing the spirit. I am completely in good health. Doctor says I am strong. I have other friends who are in my circle with meditation describe the same symptoms. I think Chophra traditional medical side is showing here. We should always say see a physician to rule out any health problems. Though in most cases people learning how to meditate or are strong spiritual healers tend to get numbness when raising their vibration. I can only guess Chopra has been doing this for many years so his energy level is different than others. And many do not report symptoms like these because we just assume it something environmental related. It is your spirit raising it's vibration. Hopefully someday we will be able to scientifically prove it.

  • Also watch your circulation (increase it), go to a reflexologist and see the corresponding organ issue, watch for diabetic issues. I have 4th finger whiteness when cold and tired or hungry. It means something, that's for sure, but I just work on maintaining overall health (exercise, food, sleep, water, mental stimulation) and keeping that finger's circulation when it goes floopy. You don't want to lose the fingers due to numbness. The blood circulation keeps them alive. Put your hands on something hot (water, kettle, coffee cup, your armpit, a pant pocket) and vigorously move/tap/rub them.

    Elaine Morrison // 2013-10-15 11:49:06 // //
  • i am meditating for years now... i never had one of those experiences commented here above, probably - like deepak allready said - it's something physical due to something else but not meditation that's for sure!

  • That's interesting. I notice dryness in my eyes and minor discomforts more when I'm meditating because I'm not distracted by sensory stimulation; it's the same thing you're saying. Your relaxed awareness is on your breathing (or whatever), but you notice small things you wouldn't notice during most other times. I was thinking about this the other day.
