In the Moment

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

How can we be completely in the moment , and be detached so to go on to the next? If we are completely in the moment , then we don't think about the next right? So how can there ever be a progression of moments?

Response:

When we are fully in the present moment, we are automatically detached. Attachment comes from living in the past or the future. When our attention is in the present, we are free and unattached of any particular outcome. We don’t have to think about the next moment for it to unfold. The progression of time and moments takes care of itself, we only need to be aware in the moment.

Love,
Deepak

  • A very good way to experience the present moment is thoughtfully walking a labyrinth, watching your every step you set in it. Once in the middle you realize something and when walking back you will take that insight with you. Meditation is not just sitting with your legs crossed and breath. A walking meditation in the labyrinth is just as effective to make you aware of the present moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xs5N-2P4syA

  • There is no next in a so-called “present moment”; in fact, there’s not even the illusion of something (we) call a “present moment” which is thought dependent on an imagined past & imagined future moment; there’s just an ever-present now. Even in the drama or story of our attachment, or the so-called freedom of detachment - now thrives: ever-present awareness – the presence Self, is always/already Being. Where awareness is aware, there is only now - there is an extinction of past, present & future & more importantly, there is an extinction (nirvana) of (you).

  • Sir, I admire you and your views. But is not detachment something more higher and more pure. Your explanation is play of words with reference to the meanings of the word. There can be detachment over an above then what you have said. The dilemma created by linguistic expressions to the thought may be resolved by linguistic play of words but the thought and reality sometimes stands out and untouched.

  • reply to Linda Bren, being in the moment implies presence and engagement without concern for the outcome or regret for unrealized expectations. Detachment implies watching moments go by- that's what time does- it moves on, and with every moment we are there, here, in the now.

    Roger Fontaine // 2013-09-23 08:48:58 // //
  • The past doesnt exsist it has come and gone and you cant change it only learn from it, the future is a illusion of the mind for no one can predict ehat is actually going to happen all we really have is the right now... apreciate and learn what exsist in this precise moment...

    Jeff Born // 2013-09-23 08:25:46 // //

  • The concept of time was presented to me in an acid trip when I was a teen.

    Patricia Hyman // 2013-09-23 08:18:48 // //
  • Sometimes the question itself is the problem. For example, when asking how to be present, the mind has fabricated a future based on the past that is masqueraiding as the present. The answer is not something to do which is just more mind stuff. All of these types of questions come down to a single distinction, doing vs. Being. One involves time, the other does not.

    Michael Martin // 2013-09-23 08:16:35 // //
  • Last week was a perfect example of how being in the moment allowed me to accomplish everything I needed to accomplish in a short time. Getting mom what she needed (a new cell phone) next door to the AT&T place was a mattress store, the beds were delivered in two days and the old furniture hauled away in one. I was prepared mentally for just getting to the decision of what to buy, but the 4 days flowed so well and we even had time to paint in water color group, visit with friends and family and go to the gym. I am so grateful for all of that and getting home safe 1300 miles away from mom. But I just didn't worry about any of it and reacted to one event as it was happening. Whew!

  • What Deepak fails to explain is that when it comes to "in the moment" Awareness, that for you or any individual being to be beyond future and past you have to be at a state of Samadhi and thats like being enlightened. So if he is telling you to meditate then yes I agree but to just all of a sudden be enlightened just by thought then I disagree cause in a state of enlightenment there is no thought. Well DEEPAK instead of always erasing or deleting my answers or questions why don't you try answering them for a change? What are you afraid of? After all your the one with all the degrees and books sold and I am just a P.O.Hindu come on show us why you sold so many books we come from the same part of the world by our ancestors. • Past, present and future are all one in the infinite Now! :-) It ALL takes care of itself, our media-led world has identified us with ego, which guards against fear - of " but what if's... " . Whether film, song, dish, walk or any experience All are FELT in the Now.Perhaps, remaining aware of what is being felt rather than what's being force-fed frees us, try it. Odd questions make you feel odd, feel the response first, each word has immense resonance. Why's it difficult for most? “The European race’s last three hundred years of evolutionary progress have all come down to nothing but four words:selfishness, slaughter, shamelessness and corruption.” Yan Fu

  • The mind is restless so each moment last a split second. Focusing in that 'moment', is feeling the emotions, smells, audio, visual, the lighting, the distant sounds. There is a lot of noise in silence..or what we perceive to be silence.Calming the body, so it stops a twitch, a wink a movement...then listening to your heart beat. Listening to your heart beat is very powerful <3

Like living in a roller coaster, enjoying the ride without worrying to much on what lies ahead ...I guess it is easier to describe than to do, because in our seemly ordinary life's we often fail to see, that we are part of this ever dancing universe

  • Shar Brook - I totally understand your predicament. Both my children were born with some serious health issues and "living in the moment" has been a life long commitment. My daughter passed suddenly this year and I am glad that I did stop and embrace along the way. But like I said earlier, we also need to think about the future moments given the state of the globe. Seems to me the question is how to balance both.

  • Adding to Carole: So it follows as a matter of certainty that anyone who espouses any teaching or doctrine or philosophy is necessarily a member of the club. Any spiritual teacher who allows students to ask questions and gives them answers is a member of the Outward Only club; an unwitting—and thereby all the more insidious—agent of ignorance. The world is full of respected and beloved spiritual and religious teachers. People ask them questions and they provide answers; question and answer, question and answer, on and on, talk and more talk, more like spiritual therapy than spiritual warfare, but all questions, no matter how sincere or heartfelt, are really the same question, Outward?, and all answers, no matter how profound or wise, are really the same answer, Yes. The subtext of every question is, Am I making progress by asking questions and trying to understand the answers? And the subtext of every answer is, Yes, you are going somewhere while sitting here talking or reading. This is progress. Be at peace. You are progressing and well-progressed. That’s the obvious lie we want to hear and those who tell it most convincingly are the most respected and sought after."

    Orlando Perez // 2013-09-22 23:24:06 // //
  • I wouldn't worry my mind with analysis paralysis....just live your life and enjoy every moment. I think about the past so I learn from my mistakes and know what not to do. I also look forward to the future and hope that it will be much better. If someone comes along and says I'm too attached or whatever, who cares? I don't bother my head with analyzing and dissecting every moment. Is this not nonsense? Is this what people call spiritually living? If it is, I detach my self from it if it is at all possible.

  • Time is a man made construct. We invened it and it doesn't exist in the universe. We are always in the now, there is no past, only memory. There is no future, only now.

    Peter D'Andrea // 2013-09-22 23:16:20 // //
  • When you realize that there is no moment but this moment then you also realize that there is no next moment or past moment. Past is dead and future is not even born yet! Only this moment is existing and existence is only an action. Existence is not a probability, it is a constant and as far as we can tell endless phenomenon.

We are detached and filling our lives with full of joy every moment we live or die. We all are detached but yet attached to the Sutra. ...the devine light.

  • In my world -- news reporting -- I can't live in the moment while I am working without some attachment to the past and to the future because I have to connect the dots to show the progression of events so that they have relevance to my readers. In a historical context, if we don't think and study the past, it is said we are condemned to repeat it. On a financial plain, if I do not think about the future, how can I plan for my retirement fund or my children's college education. Please help me reconcile these things with your idea of detachment.

We remove our desire to be successful, our fear from being unsuccessful and at the same time don't actively move towards 'mature' definitions of what measures success? No college, no career, no plans of self sustaining and adulthood (marriage, partnership, bills...etc).... im confused- but all for it!! #ExpectNothingNeverDisappointed#BlissfulIgnorance
