Uplifting Poetry

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

I am a poet, who published three books of poetry. I write mainly in response to pain, so my poems reveals the sad moments. That’s why I abandoned writing poetry so that I don’t convey any negative energy to others. Can you please advise me how to spread joy and peace and be true in expressing the negative feelings in writing.

Response:

Honest poetry must come from one’s heart, from one’s direct experience. If you are feeling bright, joyous and expansive, then your poetry will convey that. It you are experiencing emotional contraction, loss and isolation, then your poetry will convey that. However, if you want your sad experiences of poetry to spread joy and peace, then you need to get all the way to the essence of the experience. Beneath the emotional desolation there is a still beauty and truth found at the heart of one’s existence, your own pure light. By going all the way through this process and coming out the other side, sadness and grief is redeemed and transmuted in to love and peace. Poetry that accesses this experience is important because it connects to people who are stuck in sad emotions, it validates their experience while offering them a path to freedom and joy.

Love,
Deepak

  • Your writing should be helping you work through your pain not dwell on it ... Your poetry will then speak to others also in pain and guiding them also through and back to the light ...

  • Writing about pain is not wrong ....pain is inevitable part of life....i would say youR writing gives words to many people's pain....they assiciate themselves with that and may be it helps them understand that everyone goes throgh pain at some point of time in life ...rather many times. What you can do is add something in your poetry that gives them courage to face it and overcome it.

  • Write anyway . Use the reflection as a mirror to see what it is that you are not liking to see . Ask and question where it is coming from and turn the thought around . Much love and blessings . After the thoughts come and you let them go , ask for the Christ consciousness to come through you . Reflections are our very own teachers . Persistence and love , yes write from the heart

  • sadness is an inner cry; that is asking of you to give attention that is lost! this lost does not need to be objective ! but through questioning this sadness you can release the sad energy out and find many answers to solutions to get rid of that lost that you feel so intensely that it affects your writing and will stop you want continue write. FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS ARE DOORS TO YOUR SOUL; WHEN THERE IS A DISORDER IN CONNECTION BETWEEN THIS SUBSTANCES OF YOU! YOU WILL FEEL DISSOCIATED WITH YOUR FEELINGS AND LOST AND EVEN AFRAID OF YOURSELF TO WANT TO LISTEN TO YOURSELF. FOR THIS REASON; IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW YOURSELF.

  • Deepak, just keep doing what you have been doing for so long, you have helped so many people including me. You could never spread negtive energy and you would be amazed to know all the people you have helped get through the most horrible events in their lives, including me when I lost my beautiful 18 year old son to a drinck driver in 1994. I searched everywhere for help to cope, support groups, the bible, angels, near death experiences books, you name it and until I heard one of your lectures one evening many years ago, I walked away with a peace that I had been searching for that can never be put into words. Good Luck and Bless you always for what you do and all of the positive energy that you send out and trully care about all human life !!!! Millie Kelley Naples , Florida

  • Your post was very apropos for me at this particular time. My son died 3 years ago. Even though I know that if I don't master the depression, I have to have a do- Tover. I couldn't stand to lose him again. And I wrote a poem about our lives together. And how I last saw him. Anyway, long story longer, Most of the poem was joyous, I ended by cursing the powers that be. I can never stop thinking of him and even if I'm thinking of something peaceful about him, Then it's back to blackness, Both of us leaned toward the Buddhist way. And I tried to kill myself about two months after he died. So even though he killed himself, and I tried to, but was revived, we did the same thing with different endings. I get the chance to redeem myself, why doesn't he? I do want this vibration to end for me. I can only hope that he can still see his kids. He loved them so much, and his heart was so good. Even though he did bad things. His heart was pure. That's all. besides meditation and prayer, how do I stop hating God. I'm usually not selfish, it's almost foreign to me. But, I want my boy back. Thank you for your prayers for all of us, Karen

  • Great advice Deepak, I agree with you! I had to get through to the core of my negative emotions before I could express my experience in joyous way!

Calling you out of the illusion of separation & onto the path. It can be hard, for in healing there is a lot of pain, pain that has been suppressed. When you go through the pain, step out of the veil of illusion, you begin to see with the eyes of your soul & here in the garden of your heart you begin to the see the beauty outwith & within. Your radiance begins to shine a light & shows you the way. It takes courage to follow the path set out for you by the universe but trust me it's worth. For with courage all your dreams can come true. • This analysis overlooks the possibility of spiritual roots implanted within that spark our humanity, we call our soul. The sustenance they deliver is the pulsating inner rhetoric of nature. A poet feels this inner language and relates it as a unique rhetoric. Through the ups and downs of the lyric, people are drawn into a cathartic experience for feeling this expanded dimension of reality for themselves.

  • People write real poems and songs sometimes sad, but honest and wise. It is not bad that it is sad or combination of joy anger and problems but it should not be pesimism. Some people make comedy-drama movies, because they are smart, fun helped them solve problems. Some people feel better. They try to understand problems. Your wise words can help to someone to understand problems. Good luck.

  • Dear Deepak, I so appreciate your truth, once I heard you question the purpose of gathering all the leaders of religions to sort out the violence in a godless society, and you pointed out that it was odd that there wasn't one WOMAN invited there to contribute spirtually to the group concensus, especially since it is that women are the more spiritual actors on the stage of life. I was so impressed, and another time I heard you mention that just as important as the ingredients ,is the state of mind and heart , to the digestion and good health of the eater. AGAIN SIMPLE TRUTH! THANK YOU!

  • Thank you. I also write sad songs, and try to tell my story as I grow in life; as I expand my horizon and hopefully build my antakarana - I hope to one day be able to sit up there and share stories. To me songwriting/poetry takes me to the core of the now, and presents a world of possibilities. It creates a space, also for others, where it is ok to be exactly who you are, be in pain, and still hold on to faith. That is beauty

  • Both exist together and one cannot be without the other. Our experience and intimacy with the agony and despair of life is what gives us the joy and depth of gratefulness for the love and light around us. We would not notice or care much for the small miracles around us and inside of us without the sadness that leads us to their very recognition. Express them both unashamedly and free your heart and soul to be honest with ALL you want to share and it will NOT be negative energy.

  • Great advice! It sounds sort of counter productive to go in and feel the depth and breadth of your sadness and pain in order to find your peace and joy, yet I experienced it just that way. Pouring it out in words of poetry helped me express the hurt and sadness and move past it. Now when I go back and read the writing of those times they are interesting yet seem foreign and separate from me. I healed the pain sadness and hurt by fully feeling and exploring it in my words written.....it works if you can be honest with your feelings.

  • I don't see why spreading the truth of that pain and showing a healthy way of expressing it is wrong. I publish poetry that is my biography which started with "Disposable Causes" (http://kristoco.webstarts.com/), which is about my life on the streets and am now preparing my final draft of my second about the 10 years of recovery I did. I feel by sharing those things, other's realize they are not alone. Those of us who have lived such painful lives realize we must have a balance of good and bad to understand how to enjoy the good when it is present. Thank you for posing this question.

  • I deal with this daily from 2 roommates, from Saudi and Iran, simply because I choose to live with compassion and respect, they choose to bully and intimidate, threaten with innuendos and destroy our common living area. So it exists all over the world; people harm others to get they way and control, despite the outcomes, this is why the world is in the state it is in. It still does not make me want to dislike and not trust every person from Saudi Arabia and Iran. I'm sure they're are wonderful people all over the world. Some choose to be angry and bitter towards others simply because they can. At the end of the day, repression comes out in other ways like self destructive behavior, what is really sad though is when people know they come from money or come form a powerful group that is world wide, they choose to operate in the realms and forget about others , even their own kind. It is not their concern . Their concern is power and conflict. Making sure their clan, or tribe or religious or political group are the ones calling the shots. This is why it will never be solved, anywhere at all. This is why there will be violence and destruction of humanity globally. It will never end, until there is nothing left to abuse , control and reap the rewards of. Religion does not kill people. People kill people !

  • Honor the negatives, the sad, glide, for all you know it is blessing someone who needs the 'negatives' of your truth. God and the good life blesses everyone. It teaches to look beyond the natural and with steadfast faith, be lifted to a supernatural view of life. Our words as writers are God's expression in us. People's programming in life is something else.

  • Every human being on this planet experiences sadness and grief. If someone doesn't then they aren't human anymore (sociopathic or something else). People that only go around preaching sweetness and light are quite simply repressing their human nature, not overcoming it...repressing it. I would sooner trust someone who expressed grief or the experience of it in their lives at some point (because it contains great beauty), than someone who pretends that they have not experienced it. That particularly applies to spiritual teachers. A spiritual teacher who has not or acts as if they do not experience some range of normal human emotion is the most dangerous of all.

Actually, that kind of poet is very bright, joyful but he/her always borrow the others' emotion to make such art work. That is their love on writing poem and it doesn't reflect any of their true feeling. It's only a periodly, temporary feeeling at the time they create that poem.

  • I experienced something similar with journaling. It was a release for my sadness but so depressing to read things I wrote in the past. I stopped writing for a while because I didn't want to keep reading a sad story. Now I focus on writing about gratitude. :) ♡
