Scared during meditation

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Hi Deepak Thank you. Your words had transformed me a lot from being a pessimist to a great optimist. I had read most of your books and your "Super Brain" made an excellent shift in my mind-body-life level. I started meditating since 2011 with the guided meditations from chopra.com. Slowly, I started to meditate without any audio guidance. I am not consistent with the method of meditation. On a heavy work day I meditate just before going to sleep in my bed with a relaxing awareness. Most of the days I do by sitting on my Yoga mat. However the time is always the same. Yesterday when I was doing a breathing meditation, my breathing became rigorous and a sense of numbness was spreading in my body. When it became more intense, I slowed down my breath. But my body was still vibrating. And the thing why I explaining all these here is that I was scared. I was struggling to come back. My question: Why I become scared during meditation? Meditation is known to give peace and relaxation. And is a well known method to supreme consciousness. But why the beginning experience is frightening me? Please help!

Question:

Before supreme consciousness dawns, the old accumulated dark fears need to be dispelled. That is what your body is releasing with the numbness, and the fear. Treat these feelings and sensations as mere thoughts that pop up in meditation and allow your attention to easily return to your practice. They will fade in time as the underlying fears are cleared away.

Love,
Deepak

  • I find that through meditation I have learnt patience, this learning of patience has helped with the meditation. Don`t give up your meditation, it helps to answer all your questions, also, regular practice helps with discipline. Try to meditate every day, with patience, it becomes second nature, also, the more you learn, the easier and more exciting the meditation becomes :)

  • Hola Deepak Gracias. He tenido problemas para volver. Mi pregunta es: ¿Por qué me convierto miedo durante la meditación? Meditat ... Cafeterías Ver más

  • It sounds like you are suffering from anxiety and had a panic attack. I know the feeling. Did you get scared that you were going to die? Or scared that feeling would never return to your body? I had those panic attacks. I had no idea I had an anxiety disorder. But i saw my doctor and my life has never been better with medication. Meditation is meant to be relaxing not stressful.

  • It seems like you started doing rebirthing breathwork. The body is smart and sometimes it happens spontaneously to release negativities from the body. The numbness and vibrating sensations are typical of rebirthing work and they are not to be feared. :-)

  • You may have begun to hyperventilate and that can trigger a panic attack and feelings of fear ... As a long time sufferer of panic attacks the very best way to control the panic is to control the breath

  • I think we get scared because we have to face our past traumas, pains and fears to get to peace. It is like a "soul clearing". Sometimes we may need support along the way to get back to our essential self that we lost touch with.

  • this was exactly what I started to feel after a while so I stopped. Also a reason why I don't meditate anymore is becoz a highly religious friend told me it would attract evil spirits. thanks for the answer.

  • UNIVERSAL LAW We so desire to be heard. We so desire a kindly word. For our individuality to shine. For our purpose to define. To find our cause to peruse. To be acknowledged it is true. Our love to give and be allowed. Our Ego to step down from being proud. Being human is not easy we find. Constantly assailed by our unconscious mind. Following our hearts each day at a time. Following signs that are sublime, From Angels behind the veil of mist, From those that want us to get the gist. Of the meaning of this life with clues. Of better days without the bruise. When we remember who we are, When we left that exploding star. Then we knew our purpose here, Then we planned to laugh at fear. Remembering Angels are not far. Remembering God/Allah/Jehovah/Shiva is our Pa. Having gentle thoughts in mind. Having gratitude we find Helps us to be more loving than before, Helps us not to be a bore, But to help those in need But to challenge those with greed. Let us grow together now, Let us pray for a united vow Of understanding that we are the same and Of how life is just a game. Now as we begin to join as One, Now we see that we have won A prize more precious than any before, A doorway to Universal Law. Deryn de Temple 3rd June 2013

  • Yes your inner world is deposited with tons of past memories and thought which tries to distract you from your state of conscious attention. It's for sure that meditation is the journey of peace and relaxation where lots of distractions occurs in the beginning phase and you have to take it as natural and concentrate yourself to dive into peace zone through higher degree of concentration. As your body will release negative energy and higher degree of positive energy is needed to demagnetized the past deposited events, images, memories and all stuff. You have to win over distractions to land in higher state of consciousness. There might be higher level of distraction cz of meditation timing as well as your body is tired and stressed whole day and while meditating before you sleep demands higher degree of positive energy and conscious state of mind and body. It's better to do meditation in fresh hours of morning time where you can have direct alignment with nature.
