Tired of Being Holy and Perfect

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Hello Deepak, For four years I had been a very conservative and very zealous Christian. But for the past 6 months I have become tired of trying to be holy and perfect. I have been breaking away from conservative evangelicalism. Since I have stopped attending church and the fundamentalist community I have tried to find peace through spirituality and not religion (such as practicing meditation and yoga). My question is this. By letting go of my former religious traditions how can I deepen my relationship with God without feeling guilt, fear, and unworthiness? It has taken a lot of strength to even feel the freedom I do today. But I know God is there because I have felt him. How do I find the confidence to enter his presence and know that he is watching over me? Thank you

Response:

Don’t let your old concepts of God and spirituality limit your spiritual growth or your confidence. Let your actual experience be your guide. You have said how you can feel the presence of God. That is all you need for confidence that God is there, not words or beliefs. When you feel the divine presence, there is no separation or guilt or fear. All that comes from the ego mind. That small mind is also the source of the concepts about holiness and perfection, and those ideas are very far from the actual experience of God felt in your inner Being.

Love,
Deepak

  • Friend, if you have come into the experience of knowing the Lord, why are you seeking help from this source? If you've come into knowing the Lord and hearing his words, you are like the sheep Jesus refers to when He says "I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me" (John 10:14). If you know Him, pray and talk to Him. Open the Bible and meditate on Scripture. Not "trying" to be holy and perfect. That statement alone tells me something is out of joint. Jesus IS our perfection. He IS our holiness. When you live into faith, you are made right with God through Him, not your works. It is a divine love relationship. The knowledge of sin is NOT something bad. It is a gracious gift--a moral compass. We shrink back like Adam with our fig leaf covering and want to hide. But God comes walking in the cool of the garden and invites you to fellowship. And through Christ, He washes your sin-stained garments and puts you in a new, white robe. As a God-follower, the burdened conscience is meant to instruct and take you to your Father, God. Satan is called the accuser; but the Bible says we are justified through faith in Christ and there is now no condemnation. Pray. Talk to the Lord--if there is sin in your life or just lack of faith, talk to Him about it, read the Word, pray--and seek out real help and wisdom that comes from God. He will help you put your life in order and lead you in the right direction if you seek Him in faith. The human heart can find a way to be self-aggrandizing in meditation, at church, or in any religion. Being the Lord's is a testimony to Christ and to the power of God and of His Love, Grace, Mercy, Righteousness. It is an entirely different thing. I wonder if God has allowed this time to unfetter you from a religious mindset that wasn't working. He did that in my own life and I've seen it so many times. If so, that is a blessing! Hold onto your faith, pray and take steps toward an authentically free life in Christ.

  • I think he has the right to doubt and to develop his own way to have a relationship with God. When we are in a community such as church or congregation we feel safer because facing the challenges alone is harder then in a group. All those biblical explanation is rethorical, Ms Anna has explained it accordingly the christian point of view. i don`t disagree with her, but if he is having the opportunity to have a private experience with the Lord, this is awesome to him!, I have my own doubts and theoretical disagreements with my religious institution, but I am keeping my tradition because wherever I go it takes part on me. This is about developing wings keeping the roots. Open up your mind and don`t lose your Faith. Wherever you go God is at your side.

  • Kalindi, we MUST change our path. Yes! Or rather, make course corrections as we adjust to the revelation that comes into our lives on a multitude of levels. We are all connected, loved by God, and our path with Him is intimate. As a Christ-follower, I believe the Word of God and identify Truth as a revealed person. This means I believe in Absolute Truth, as He has been and is revealing Himself. He makes sense--even in my humble grasp of Him; whereas I think that the "many paths to truth" model does not make sense. Yet, I am not a "religionist," and am as rejected in that circle as I am in a secular one. I think yoga is fine and certain forms of meditation are great. For sake of argument, according to the Apostle Paul, a believer could even eat meat sacrificed to idols and not be engaging in idolatry by doing do, if his conscience allowed it. Those who live anew in Christ should do so with a new mind; a God-centered mind. All can have a unified purpose, and will be approached differently than someone whose intention is idolatrous (self or otherwise). I personally became a Christ-follower after first being deep in New Age Belief and practices. I became frustrated that those practices didn't offer eternal hope, relationship with God, and an answer for the sin I knew was present in my life. After my conversion, I went from that to being like this questioner, and my spiritual understanding still rested on my own merits; it created great difficulty for me. Although it was a different guise, it was still the same animal. I am so thankful for all His patient, loving, and scandalous dealings with me. He graciously calls us out of both carnal and religious slavery, out of our own personal caves of hiding. 1 Kings 19:11-15 "The LORD said, 'Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.' Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?' He replied, 'I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty....' [and he lamented]. The LORD said to him, 'Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert....'"

  • Anna i think we all come from the same "source". We are all one. I don't think it really matters which path we take really. People "change" their "path" (which I think is also just a concept made by our small mind). Everything is one. We are all one. This source or that source what's the difference really ?

Try meditation and just open your heart up,,,,,good luck my friend, dump all that negative stuff because that is all it is and turn it into a positive attitude.

  • Concepts and beliefs are the biggest hindrance to knowing yourself. Moses said I AM THAT. You are also That, you just havent realized it. When you realize what you can manifest with intention and will then prayer ends. Prayer is begging. Know thyself said Jesus. He said god is no futher than your breath. there is no right or wrong. They are judgements of the mind....and the mind is a bundle of thoughts, it doesnt exist. Be Present, breathe...you are magnificent. You are a conscious being, awaken to the truth.

  • It took me 30 years to free myself of religious indoctrination. There is no need to feel guilt as this life is your journey alone. You do not have to explain or tell friends or family. Just say, "I'm not feeling church these days" or "I like to bike the lake trail and be in nature on Sundays" and leave it at that. I would encourage at this time a little side study of sociology of religious indoctrination and, creation of the Bible from academic, rather than faith based, sources. I feel one of the biggest lies of all is the idea you must CHOOSE a faith to "believe" in and stick to so as not to disappoint a certain community of people. You are almost there! Be free in creation!

  • In my humble opinion, you became tired because of reaching things that are unnecessary in serving God. To be Holy and Perfect as what you have said you are trying to do for 4 years now is not a requirement to be labeled as Christian. It is an eventuality...a consequence...even pastors do not impose such standards to themselves. You can see them to be like Holy and Perfect because that's how people around them perceived of them, not them setting the standards to themselves. After many years of living in a christian way---that is basically to live a simple life and be thankful of all the blessings bestowed and share it to others in need--- the community of christians witnessed this progress and get inspired by what this man is doing and eventually the community's appreciations put this man into the special position of being Holy and Perfect.

  • @ JC, sorry but Jesus is not God he is the son of God. too many scriptures to prove it. even if he was (what is the point of it all?) make sense! And to the person asking the question, The bible urges us to draw close to God, and he will draw close to you. James 4:8Jesus said: this means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of whom you sent forth Jesus Christ. John 17:3 As you read the bible you will see just how ..loyal Revelation 15:4 he is good and ready to forgive. Psalm:86:5 merciful and gracious Exodus 34:6 Patient 2Peter 3:9 slow to anger and abundance in love and kindness.

  • Religion is law. Law is the knowledge of good and evil, precisely what Elohim, our Source, did not want us to have. Jesus himself said LOVE fulfills all of the law and the prophets. All that is left for us to do, then, is love. Love is not a feeling or emotion. It is a motivation. John says, "God is Love" . If Love is our Source, and we were created in the image and likeness of our Source, then we are meant to look like, and be like LOVE. If Love is our sole motivation, we can not sin, Sin is only being motivated by the opposite of Love, which is NOT hate, but fear. All things that can be called sin, have their root in fear.

  • Left on our own, we as sinners could never be close to God. he has revealed himself to us. in any relationship, closeness is based on knowing the person, valuing his qualities and ways. it doesn't stop with the things he created. also he provided the bible, his word. Psalms 34:8 says: Taste and see that God is good, O you people; happy is the man who takes refuge in him

Amor, Deepak

  • I am walking by this way, not searching a Higher Power outside, but inside. The power the moves me ahead comes from my willingnness, incentivated by a mistery which I can only discover by practicing meditation and silence. God is more than I thought before, He is not limite by a single faith.

He estado separándome del evangelismo conservador. Gracias.

  • This is so lovely. It resonates so much with me. God is in us, in every moment, he is peace and love, not religion, fundamentalism and discrimination. I realised about this when I was just 15 years old, and it's been with me since then.

  • My personal understanding, spirituality is a unique personal experience, we are all a piece of creation and our creator, there is only ONE; the illusion is in seperateness, we are unique in our expression, as the Artists who each have a different impression of the same vision. God is a personal experience, only the believer of Truth, which is Christ (Love), may experience and become a knower. It is not found in religion, but within the Heart. OMni Love and Blessings <3

  • God has no religion, god is love and is there for anybody who embraces him. Religion is a manmade concept. Guilt is a false emotion...fear is a waste of time and unworthiness is not love. Please feel joy in what you do and how you choose to live your life. Be kind to yourself and others. Smile, love and gravitate towards positive emotions when you can. Be the beacon of the light the world needs today.

  • If she realised that the new covenant in the bible in Hebrews God Talks about writing his new covenant laws in the hearts and minds of people so Jesus new message was about the gifts of the Holy Spirit love peace joy which are spiritual gifts. The old laws of the 10 commandments no person could live up to them so god sent his son and said you should live by the spirit and follow it, meaning surrender to it and allow it to guide you. Anything that isn't of this is not allowing you to be the real inner spiritual person you are. Galatians chapter 5:22 identifies the fruit I the spirit. One god but Holy Spirit is the same..:-)

  • It's hard to be explained, and it cannot be explained. However, you can be pointed toward it. "To those who have, more will be given." And, "Seek God first." Being free is not about conforming to orthodoxy. Instead, it is about BEING or EMBODYING or EXPRESSING freedom. Joy, kindness, humility, generosity... Let these energies flow through you. You can generate any quality of feeling you choose... But don't forget the "...you choose" part. You choose. What's it going to be?
