Staying Calm

Question:

Hi Deepak How can we stay calm during crisis situation in our life? Though I know up and downs are part of life & the happy times will surely come, sometimes the pressure of the moment becomes unbearable. How to have tranquility during tough times?



Response:

The secret is to locate your calm center which is always there as the silent core of your being. Acting from that place allows you to respond to whatever difficulty with balance and grace. Many people find that the best way to connect with this source of inner strength is by taking three or four full breaths deep into your abdomen. As you do this hold in your mind that with every inhalation you are bringing a calming, clarifying wisdom to your true self, and with every exhalation you are completely letting go of any tension, frustration, or fear inside. After a few of these clearing breaths, feel the presence of your calm center and listen to what guidance it offers for your next action.

After those three breaths yesterday, we were able to switch gears and most of the students were successful in the task assigned to them afterward. When the flow of oxygen to our brain is increased and fresh, we are more focused, and we are calmer.

  • We had a terrible, unspeakable tragedy in our family. I had already been through a lot of tough times but when this event happened, I thought it would be the end of me. Miraculously, I handled every part of the crisis over the course of about 5 years pretty calmly and without losing who I am. This situation proved to me that when you need it most, God does give you extra strength. I believe I tapped into the Collective Conscious. I also kept reminding myself that although the tragedy was painfully real, it's all part of this "play" we're acting out. It's not the true reality. And most importantly, love and energy never dies, it only changes form.

  • that is all good, the breathing techniques but it would not solve the problem, meaning the next time it would be just as hard. I believe it is the realization that would set you free. First you must realize that "ups and downs" governs the life, it is the inhalation and exhalation of God. If there were no "down" times how would you know when you are experiencing an "up" time? You wouldn't and so the design is perfect, you should experience these moments, but don't allow it to affect you in a way that would impact your life, through realization that these experiences only enhances the experience of the "up" times it will let you free. Look at it, observe it, see what your emotions are rising up and why, think why and once you have an answer you will know and calm down, or even if you don't find an answer why you felt one way or another, the search for that answer will calm you down so that is a "win-win" solution.

  • Good advice, Deepak. Practicing this is the only way to get better at it. Be prepared for this to take some time and a great deal of failure before success occurs. Consider also what your motive is for wanting to be calm during crisis situations. The purer the motive the better.
