We Could Use God's Help - Where Is He?

Category:  SF Gate

Deepak Chopra, MD is the author of more than 70 books with twenty-one New York Times bestsellers and co-author with Rudolph Tanzi of Super Brain: Unleashing the Explosive Power of Your Mind to Maximize Health, Happiness, and Spiritual Well-being. (Harmony)

Tragedies like the Newtown shootings and the devastation from Hurricane Sandy test people's faith in God. When God fails to intervene in human suffering, the acceptance of a loving deity who cares for his children arouses fresh doubts. For centuries, God's failure to perform has been blamed on worshippers. Sin, temptation, human frailty, the seduction of evil - a whole range of faults belong to us rather than God. Even in an age that is much less strict in matters of religion, "What did I do wrong?" is a thought that lurks in the mind when bad things happen.

What if we erase the slate and look clearly at the situation. Something terrible happens, people suffer, they implore God for help, but no help comes. If such a thing occurred when a house caught fire and the fire trucks never came, naturally the blame would fall on those who are assigned to rescue us. Is it fair to apply the same standard to a God who fails to show up?

The atheist position on this question is both simple and certain. God doesn't show up because he doesn't exist. But the rest of us are likely to feel mixed emotions. When you look at yourself and ask where you stand on the God issue, you are almost certainly in one of the following situations:
  • Unbelief: You don’t accept that God is real, and your unbelief is expressed by living as if God makes no difference.
  • Faith: You hope that God is real, and your hope is expressed as faith.
  • Knowledge: You have no doubt that God is real, and therefore you live as if God is always present.

When someone becomes a spiritual seeker, they want to move from unbelief to knowledge. The path is by no means clear, however. Yet without actual knowledge of God, no one can settle a basic question like "Should God be relied upon to heal suffering or divert disasters?" Short of true knowledge, you either shrug God off for being useless in the everyday world or you take on faith that his infinite wisdom reaches beyond our limited perspective - in other words, suffering fits into the divine plan.

Let’s say that you recognize yourself in one of these three states of unbelief, faith, and knowledge. It’s quite all right if they are jumbled and you have passing moments of each. What feels like a muddle could actually be a path. Unbelief can lead to faith and faith to true knowledge. This holds true for many other things in life, only we don't use religious terms for it. When you learn to ride a bike, or roller-skate, or how to be in love, uncertainty dominates at first, then you begin to believe that you're getting somewhere, and finally you know that you are there.

It's ironic that the band of militant atheists who have attracted so much public attention, like Richard Dawkins base their unbelief on evolution. In reality they don't believe that spirituality can evolve. They are stuck on one note - religion is a primitive throwback - which makes no sense on any level. The history of civilization is paralleled by the evolution of religious thought. Thomas Aquinas and the Buddha weren't exactly sitting around a fire chipping at arrow heads, but militant atheists make their unbelief look like "progress."

If there is a path to God, we are asking the big questions while in a muddled state; with clarity, these questions may have credible answers. Certainly a secular age isn't going to back pedal and return to dogmatic faith. At the same time, spiritual experiences are natural and universal; they have always existed and still do, which means that God is available, if he exists. (For the moment I'll use the conventional "he," although the deity has no gender and shouldn't been seen in the image of a human being).

God is hidden somewhere, as a presence, in all three situations, whether as a negative (the deity you are fleeing from when you walk away from organized religion) or as a positive (a higher reality that you aspire to). Being faintly present isn’t the same as being truly important, much less the most important thing in existence. If it was possible to make God real again, I think everyone would agree to try. In the next series of posts, I'd like to trace how unbelief can lead to God. This isn't a way to validate organized religion or to defend the God of any particular religion. What we'll be interested in is discovering what makes God real, living, and true.

  • Simple question: who put the breath in your mouth? What developed first in the womb: the heart or the brain? Is a heart just a simple lifepump? All these questions can be answered by Science. Yet the human body is as individual as there is a person. So is the God we perceive......

  • Since suffering is built into the fabric of living, I have to ask what purpose does it serve? I`ll even answer my own question: it serves to add contrast to our lives and to assist us in learning. What do we learn from suffering? I guess, the answer is in the question.

  • Instead of defining an atheist as in the position of Unbelief: "You don’t accept that God is real, and your unbelief is expressed by living as if God makes no difference" you can also define it as the position of Knowledge: "You have no doubt that God is NOT real, and therefore you live as if God is NOT present." Why is the author making the assumption that only religious people have "Knowledge" and that Atheists are like in his example, a kid starting to ride a bike? Atheists believe they have a better reason to be in a position of knowledge (though you can`t prove a negative, for all practical purposes you can believe that god is not real just like the Loch Ness Monster is not real) than religious folks.

  • God`s Prophets come few and far between. I see what you are doing here: while speaking of God and human`s different ways of believing (or non-belief), you are also seeming to appear as though you`re not sure where your own Faith lies. It`s always been pretty simple to me. http://www.reverbnation.com/summeritrains

  • We are not meant to suffer. This is the choose of man. We all have the power within ourselves to be as God intended. Divine original state. You will only understand this if you have experienced this oneness with the divine light of all creation. That which is one with all things. What man has choose in this life and on this plain is over and over again the state of ego. Self. This has led mankind further from this divine source, divine intention, and one conscious mind. Oneness with the universe. There have been those who have come from this divine light to teach knowledge of this divine. The Christ, Buddha just to name 2. Unfortunately man, for reasons of self and creed have distorted the messages for their own purposes. The true message of ascension of the mind and body to a higher state of being has been hidden, tucked away, and kept from the masses. To have this knowledge does not serve those who seek power, prestige, money, and ranking. With true knowledge of Divine you have no need for any of these things or labels. It is the machine and current society that has turned so far from the natural and true nature of our creator`s divine truth. People are losing hope because they`ve put all of there faith in man. The hope that`s been lost is not by God`s doing, but by the very thinking that is furthest from this divine source. Man is losing faith and hope in man. Look what we have done! This is not our creator`s doing, this is the free will of man and ultimate choose. To listen to their God voice and turn away from it. Each and every one of us know what is right and wrong for our souls. This has been put in our very DNA by our creation. The damage to mankind comes when the chooses that are made are done for self, and ego. Not for God and mankind as a whole. We are divinely connected! We are in the process of correction! This is inevitable!

  • Your reference to the inevitable evolution of spirituality reminds me of Beth Green`s book, "Sacred Union: The Healing of God," in which she suggests that it`s time for us to realize that God is also evolving, that the fragments of consciousness must honor our oneness, and that includes God`s fragmentation. I`m thrilled to see these ideas being spoken by many now.

  • It`s not a question of why doesn`t God stop pain and suffering, but rather a question of why does man allow pain and suffering to continue? My beliefs system is that of an active God in each individual life. However, I am responsible to find the method to connect my inner light to Gods external light so as to be whole and one with him.

  • In my view, individuals have neither been told nor they have thought seriously about their health, wealth and peace; though everyone is working towards these three. To me individuals are not at all committed for any goal. They seem to be working but they have too many things in their hands. Each individual has so many pending items in its to do list today and life. Out of all of them is meditation, God etc. So Sir your article is very good. Least is needed to do meditation; to attain health; to attain peace; to do prayer; to reach the prayer place;to have love; to give love. Least is needed for anything one aspires. Each one of has turned 40 years or 50 years or some age. Still nothing worth to show the self appears. Each one is busy is demonstrating to others the path. So things are really non-conclusive. To relax nothing is needed. Liked and loved your each book and article. Still why every one is so much in race for Peace at the level of the Self. I am too confused and I have completed 60 years. Less remains and pending list of TO DO ITEMS still big.

  • God is so close to every one of us and A lot of people have forgotten that , and thats why the world population is searching to far away for god in all the world religions , they all came from one and all of the infinite same source of all that is , but are all designed to keep the real knowledge of god and his pure intent away from the common masses of people on this planet , and that is designed by the elite that pull the strings behind the curtain and that rewrite the books of divine knowledge now for the last 5000 years , so that there is not much left off the gods pure intentional way to ascension !

  • Words with many meanings... I suspect many of the arguments between science and religion stem from the use of the same words, with different meanings. The word `knowledge` seems to have significantly different definitions. For example, Chopra: "knowledge: You have no doubt that God is real, and therefore you live as if God is always present". The term `no doubt` could do with some clarification, and in the absence of this, I am guessing it is some sort of `deep faith`?. Scientology, for example, even bases its name on `knowing`, but has another definition of knowledge - mostly that whatever they say, is knowledge. Within Science, knowledge is our collection of verified theories that are testable and make reliable, repeatable predictions about what will happen next, given a set of events. But also, that these experiments are repeatable by different people, and with double-blind testing to eliminate human biases. So Science`s definition of knowledge is quite different to most religion`s definition of knowledge. I can`t help but think that if each belief system had its own unique set of words, there would be less arguments. Instead we end up disagreeing because the same words have different meanings. So I would ask here, what is religion`s definition of the word `knowledge`, as differentiated from science`s definition?

  • This is my personal experience .. my opinion only; As a child.. in Sunday school.. I not only believed god created us... but believed he watched us all.. with a plan.. with rules and consequences. Then I learned about free will and choice.. but still believed in rules and consequences. Then I learned about science and now am in between thinking that it is all scientific and/or god had the beginning... from the first big bang.. but then science took over. But in religion or in science.. there are still rules and consequences. God.. however you think of it is our conscious mind.. the part that makes us human.. the part that thinks of others.. the future.. the reason god seems to have left us is because as a species we are regressing to thinking of only ourselves and survival .. instead of the world around us.

Through triumph we create a forward momentum of love. We learn to be "better" and what it is we don't want by receiving something we don't want. Ours is to strive to create "Heaven on Earth" by loving one another to heal within. This planet is our school and we have ALOT to learn.

  • From my point of view i can tell you this God does exist God is all that is all that isn`t and all that is in between or in other word The Alpha And The Omega, and he will never intervene i our lives because to do that would be to limit the free choice and free will that he gave all of us. Furthermore every thing that you call "bad" were created by us using what is called collective consciousness or group consciousness and if you ask how can that be that we cause ourselves harm its simple we constantly creating our reality and society teaches us that we need to suffer which is absolutely stupid yet from fear we create the exact suffering and then we do not understand why we suffer. So i would tell you right here and now we can change all that very easily all is needed is a shift in consciousness to shift from living with fear to living with love of self and God because God is all loving even if you do not believe in God, God believes in us and we never can go astray for to long because God Has, Have and will always help us find the way back to him.

  • Meher Baba said, "God is not to be learned or studied or discussed or argued about." [Doing so will not get one one step closer, but can help gain and maintain one`s focus.] "He is to be contemplated, felt, loved and lived." [It is in these efforts where progress lies, as well as the gift of grace of the Master.]

  • Your defination of faith is wrong. By saying "hope god is real" means you`re doubting the existence of god and you can`t have faith in god and doubt at the same time, its impossible for your mind to accept that. You defined faith which is actually agnostic theism I think.

  • Throughout life we ignore God`s calling~because we are human. Not an excuse, simply a reason for why we ignore the pebbles, the stones, the rocks that try to get our attention. Finally, when we don`t learn to make different choices, we get hit with a brick and sometimes the whole house falls. It is God trying to get our attention. And, it is because we have been given the gift of choice as humans, God does not intervene but leaves the choices up to us. Most times our distress is created by making the wrong choices but we are in fact just that~human and until we can surrender, we will unfortunately keep suffering one distress after another. Surrender simply means living in the moment. It is that easy!

  • Since suffering is built into the fabric of living, I have to ask what purpose does it serve? I`ll even answer my own question: it serves to add contrast to our lives and to assist us in learning. What do we learn from suffering? I guess, the answer is in the question.

  • Simple question: who put the breath in your mouth? What developed first in the womb: the heart or the brain? Is a heart just a simple lifepump? All these questions can be answered by Science. Yet the human body is as individual as there is a person. So is the God we perceive......
