Young Identities

Category:  Ask Deepak

Question:

Hello Deepak! I've read several of your books and follow you on twitter, so I thought I'd come to ask you a question. I'm young, 19 about to be 20. My peers all seem to have a well established "identity". They like art and only art, they like music and only music, so on and so on. I don't feel like I think I should feel. My current live in partner has a passion for music. I've tried my hand at almost everything and I have really enjoyed it, but I never felt like I belonged to any one of these groups. Most of my friends developed their passions in high school and they come from a better financial background then I do. I didn't get the theatre, writing, or even general education that they did. I'm also not a very social person so I didn't get to interact with any social groups that would help me define myself. I know I have talents, lots of them actually. But I have no 100% passion for anything. It's getting to be awkward when people ask me about my life because they all have a perfectly defined answer as to what they want to do. I know this is just a stage in development, but is there any way I can find that "passion"?

Response:

You seem to have fallen in with a group of peers with strong artistic sensibilities and personalities. When we think about people who have passion for life, it is usually the artists who come to mind first. They are driven to create and they love certain styles, colors, textures, music, etc. That intensity of energy is exciting and stimulating, but if you are among the other 90 percent plus of the population who isn’t a strong creative type without an obvious passion, then it is easy to assume that you are missing some key ingredient for your life happiness. That isn’t the case. You, like most people, will need to recognize your passion and life purpose in more subtle and less dramatic signs. You already recognize that you have lots of talents. Those talents are the activities that come natural to you, that make you feel good and help others. That is the quiet version of passion. That sense of satisfaction in exercising your talent is the seed of passion, and that feeling tells you when you are following the right direction in your life purpose. Listen and follow that feeling and you will find your way.

Love,
Deepak

  • People always as you what you would like to be in life. This is a very difficult question. The real question that can be answered is what you would like to have in life. You can easily look around and decide that which you would like to have ex: I would like to have the respect of others around me, I would like a life that was creative, I would like to make enough money to support a certain life style, I would like to help children etc. Once you have listed out that which you would like to have ( in real detail). Then you can figure out what you would need to do, to have the above. And then magically you have figured out what you would like to be.

  • I don't consider myself to be a ''talented'' person, but have always had a passion for living, and have discovered that I can do anything that I put my mind to. As a child I wanted to be outside playing, and was very passionate about that. I hated being couped up, so really disliked being in a classroom. I couldn't wait to be grown up, to live my own life, to make my own decisions - I know that I was very passionate about that. At 19, the world is your oyster just waiting to be discovered by you. By taking action, going out, doing things, going places, and socializing, your passion will reveal itself. You definitely don't have to answer any silly question about what you want to do with your life. Don't let other people burst your bubble with their paradigms

  • I find a lot of the artistic types with loads of "passion" aren't really truly passionate. They act that way because they are told they must have a deep "passion" to be successful. No advice given on how to find one or cultivate it, so people fake it.

  • find someone who does something that inspires you and volunteer to work for them, or ask them about their life-I was feeling really dull and passionless and then I found my friend Nicci Cagan-in fact she used to work with you Deepak. I met her when i was looking for a home in the Hudson Valley and she and i got to talking and she was speaking about good local food for everyone and the school food summit that I am now involved in. From my experience-if you have the time to wander-enjoy timeless time- and explore what if is/was that you love-if you enter the field of that possibility, creativity, and receptivity, you will meet the right guides that will reflect back to you your true passion. Until then-take care of yourself, eat well, move your body, be out in nature, and connect with your community.

  • Love this question. Its assumed that talented people are some kind of artist. But talent can be a nurse in a retirement home that has a passion for her work and makes the last days for someone feel genuine love and empathy. If you don't know what your passion is start with what you think you might be interested in.

  • My advice for this person is that something that if you are looking for inspiration, you can't find it, it finds you. You can always find motivation, but inspiration is to be inspired by something or someone. Nobody can tell you what your passion is, you just know. Just do what you do, don't take life too serious, and enjoy the present.

  • Amazing how words like yours may help so many people at the same time. I turn 41 last month. I only realized that what I was working in for the past 15 years was something more "certain" and something that I knew we'll. but I was taking the path that both of my parent took.... Doing a work because it is so and to please my parents. Luckly, i choose to closed my company after 4 years. Something deep inside told me that I had to visit other path in this life and had to let go this old path of certainty.... Few Months after saying good bye to my company... I choose this summer to work in what my heart said... To share with you how I found it .... It was sooo simple but I was searching so far away. But at the end, I ask my little Kim ... "What do I like the most ! " ... " What is coming to me in such a simple way and that it makes me feel good inside... ". Then I eard my dad (whom past away few years ago) said to my heart... "Do what your heart say. Just listen in silence and let it speak to you. Don't rationalize it. Just do what you love and success will come same way. Be who you really are not what you wanted to be to pleased me". Namaste

  • I've struggled with purpose my whole life. I was never allowed to explore who I was or what I thought I might enjoy (music and writing and art). I was always told to be more 'practical' to pay the bills. So my 20s were spent figuring it out. My advice is not to listen to anyone else but listen to your heart as Deepak says and know you have a purpose in this world and it will keep evolving as you evolve but it will come out of a deep love for something you already do or want to do. Follow that. And don't let anyone stop you.
