Ayurvedic Medicine
Read article and commentOriginally reported by www.wusa9.com
The treatments may seem strange, foreign, even mystical. But the ancient Hindu system of medicine called Ayurveda has many high-profile proponents these days.Renowned physician and author Deepak Chopra has taught the tenets of Ayurveda to everyone from Oprah to Lady Gaga, and has witnessed its healing properties.
Chopra says the whole idea is to create balance in the body. He says, "By balance, I mean a return to what in medical terms or biological terms is called homeostasis, self regulation. So any disease, doesn't matter what it is, is a disruption in homeostasis. And in the integrated approach of Ayurveda and many other traditional healing systems, all you're doing is using different modalities to restore the original state of balance."
"Ayurveda is useful in any chronic illness. Coronary artery disease, rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammations. Bronchial asthma, obesity, type II diabetes. Because these are all linked to lifestyle."
The Parma Center for Health, Medicine & Wellness in Vienna, Virginia is the only Ayurveda-based spa in the D-C Metro area. Practitioner Thara Gowda, who studied and worked with Deepak Chopra, does a full assessment of each patient who comes in."We look at the person the whole body and the whole person to identify mental physical and emotional imbalances," she says.
In Fuad Ahamed's case, chronic hip pain was literally crippling his lifestyle. But after getting ayurvedic massage with herb and spice-infused oils, he's gotten relief, and returned to running.
"I tried different medications at different spots and then somebody referred me to these guys and since then it's been a life-changing experience," says Ahamed.
Life-changing because mental and emotional health is part of the treatment too. For example, a therapy called Shirodara addresses mental health and well-being and neurological issues with herbally medicated lukewarm oil, that streams over the forehead.
Kim Ridings says it is an incredibly relaxing and rejuvinating sensation, and literally clears the mind. She's undergone Shirodara while also following a prescribed dietary detox program with Ayurvedic herbs and supplements.
"I started almost three weeks ago, I've lost 13 pounds," says Ridings. "It's mind body and soul. I truly believe that."

Downward Dog with Deepak Chopra
Read article and commentWritten by Katherine Rosman for the Wall Street Journal
Deepak Chopra, 65, sometimes wears socks when he does yoga. His left fourth toe gives him trouble — “an old cricket injury,” he said last week, just after he completed his morning yoga practice and just before he left his apartment to meditate in an apartment a few floors below with P. Diddy.
I know this – and here are words I, as a Wall Street Journal reporter, didn’t anticipate saying – because I did yoga with Chopra on assignment, as a part of a new column in which I will practice yoga with interesting people and write about it.
Chopra, the best-selling author of books like “Spiritual Solutions,” does a 45-minute physical yoga practice every day, in addition to a daily two-hour meditation (which begins at 4 AM) and a visit to the gym. When he is at his home base in New York City, he practices in his midtown living room with Tara Stiles, 31, the founder of Strala Yoga in NoHo who has brought affordable yoga classes to the masses through her iPhone app (which Chopra helped develop).
The plan was to meet at Chopra’s apartment for a seven AM practice. There was an absolute deluge of rain that morning and I arrived five minutes late.* When I made it up to his 69th floor apartment, he was sitting at his living room table, surfing Twitter on his Apple laptop computer. In addition to socks, he was wearing thin black sweatpants and a black Chopra Center t-shirt with the word “peace” scrawled on the back in several languages (shanti, shalom, salaam). When we settled onto our mats, Chopra removed his rhinestone-encrusted glasses.
His apartment is a very comfortable size and has endless views of the city and the Hudson River. It is decorated with art and artifacts of South Asian, South American and Indian influence and provenance. Two guitars with ornate beading on their fronts rested on a credenza beneath a wall-mounted flat-screen television. Chopra nodded at the guitars and explained they were made by a famous instrument-maker who enjoyed peyote.
“Steve Jobs said that taking LSD was one of the most important experiences of his life,” I said.
“For me too,” replied Chopra.

Well, I did not take any LSD and yet... still everything I needed has come my way :) No doubt Hatha Yoga (in my younger days introduced in the West and still seen then as a very weird thing...) gave me the One insight I needed for the rest of my life. But there was no Guru present for me. Had to figure it all out by myself and a nice doctor who sensed I was not mad but had not received yet the opportunity to figure it all out by myself. So he gave me that. If that is a Guru than fathers and mothers still need to learn a lot to educate their children in a proper way.....

I feel so happy at discovering such beauty to see with my eyes and my heart. I ordered a watch and am looking forward to wearing it. I have a feeling that I will receive a lot of questions about it.

Who Is God?
Read article and commentOriginally published by the DailyBhakstar
Explaining who God is, motivational speaker, Deepak Chopra says as soon as we define God we limit God. God is the ultimate mystery that we cannot define. God is our highest potential to know ourselves and the end goal of our seeking. It can be infinite potential, creativity, love, compassion among many other things. God is the universe in manifestation.
Can we experience God personally? As soon as we define God we limit God. God is the ultimate mystery that we cannot define. I stick with my own explanation, God is divinity in motion, always moving, always still, God is manifestation, at will.......

YouTube Taps Pros For Original Niche Content

Written by Brad Stone and Andy Fixmer for SFGate.com
In an industrial area south of downtown Los Angeles, 15 miles and a world away from the back lot of Hollywood mega-studio Warner Bros., Gotham Chopra is figuring out how to digitally insert Luke Skywalker onto a green screen.
Gotham, son of spirituality author Deepak Chopra, sits in a small studio recording "Holy Facts," a series of two- to four-minute videos that will guide viewers through some of the more unlikely aspects of the spiritual sciences. One episode will explain why some children believe they can recall events from past lives. The episode he's recording will explore the trend of people telling census takers their religion is Jedi.
Chopra acknowledges that the show, which is funded by YouTube and will start running on the site in July, would have struggled to find a home offline.
"If I had ever pitched that concept anywhere in town, they would have kicked me off the lot," he said.
But niche content is welcome on the long tail of the Internet. "If we do our job right, there's no reason that video content can't get hundreds of thousands or millions of views on YouTube," Chopra said.
"Holy Facts" is only one sign that YouTube, like the Chopras, is searching for greater meaning. Late last year, Google's video-sharing site announced it would spend $100 million to support video programming. YouTube is funding filmmakers, artists, writers and proven online hit makers with grants that range from a few hundred thousand to a few million dollars.
It will eventually have about 100 new channels, including the Chopra Well, which will feature 10 spirituality-themed shows. By building a library of professionally produced programming that is closer to "Charlie's Angels" than to "Charlie Bit My Finger," Google hopes to attract more viewers, reduce the need to negotiate with Hollywood studios, and woo some of the big-name advertisers who have been reluctant to put their products next to cat videos.
