Obama's Chances in 2012: A Season for Reason
Category: Politics , SF Gate
Reason vs. Unreason: This is the major contest, leaving all policy details aside. The New York Times pointed out that the various Republican hopefuls were outdoing themselves in extremism, making claims and charges against Obama "that would be laughable if they were not an insult to intelligence and the President." One can make light of seeing one right-winger after another bob up to challenge Romney's all but certain nomination. As one late-night comic said, "How many more clowns do you have in that car?" It has been a circus of irrationality.
Unreason tells a host of fabrications as part of its twisted narrative. There's the deportation of all illegals, for example, which has no chance of ever happening. But even the moderate alternative (moderate in this surreal landscape, that is) of Mitt Romney goes further into irrationality. Whether he means it or not, Romney vows to allow states of make abortion illegal, to lower taxes for the rich even further, to double the size of Guantanamo, reinstate torture, and gut both Obamacare and financial regulations.
Each voter must decide which trend to support. Even if, as suspected, Romney reverts to being a Massachusetts moderate Republican, he will have to contend with the ultra-ideologues in the House and Senate. There is a widespread shrug of the shoulders among many Democrats, taking the attitude that "Romney wouldn't be so bad." but this in essence is a silent vote for unreason and a kick in the teeth to President Obama and his complete loyalty to reasoned policies.
Futurism vs. Reaction: Obama has made clear that the best way out of the current stubborn recession is by envisioning a productive future; thus his policies on the environment, infrastructure, and alternative energy. The Republican candidates, to a man, hit the drumbeat of restoring America to its past greatness. They are trying to parrot Reagan's optimism, but in effect they are preaching the erasure of every progressive reform won over the past three years.
Globalism vs. Nationalism: The Republicans, having promoted two egregious, expensive wars over the past decade, have now retreated into isolationism and America first. They are hostile to globalism, a form of blindness that will undermine our future and every other country's as well. As difficult as the challenges are from China and Islamic extremism, Obama sees that partnership with China is inevitable and that terrorism can be dealt with absent a massive standing army.
Science vs. Prejudice: A host of issues, from stem cell research to global warming, finds the right wing playing the part of the ostrich with its head in the sand, pandering instead to religious dictates and assorted faith-based myths. There is an utter absence of respect for the facts, and even topics that should be settled, such as the right of privacy when it comes to sex acts and birth control, are insidiously attacked. Obama restored the government's position to one of respect for data and research in many areas; that needs to be upheld.
Tolerance vs. Intolerance: A democracy is upheld through mutual toleration. This includes tolerating people who are in favor of intolerance. Through thirty years of reactionary conditioning, we've allowed basic values to deteriorate. It's tragic that the very word “values" has been coopted by the most intolerant sector of society, but ever since Nixon's Southern strategy, the once admired Republican Party has decayed into a tent under which not just traditional conservatives but gun nuts, racists, religious fundamentalists, and the like find shelter. Obama has had only three years to try and counter such toxic conditioning; it will take more.
These major trends are worth mentioning in order to clear our vision. I join millions of others mourning the fact that Obama hasn't been able to pass the best kind of health care reform, that he lost several major battles on the Hill, and that the Republican minority in the Senate, using the threat of filibuster, has successfully opposed nominees for important offices, not to mention up to 80% of proposed legislation supported by the majority. Democracy is being sold down the river; partisan paralysis has become an incurable condition.
But none of that should be our excuse for losing heart, much less turning our backs on the upcoming election. Trends are unmistakable, and every vote is a voice saying yes to one side of the trend and no to the other.

@Ainsleigh: the action has to come from ordinary people, like yourself, like the occupy movement. It is like Deepak has already told here in a video: Occupy yourself. He even has co-created a website where people can share their ideas and the dreams they have for a better society together. People all over the world can add their ideas to it, in many different ways. Here is the link: http://www.citizenglobal.com/occupy/together/#!/home

There is plenty of what Truthhurts writes about that rings true. Unfortunately most of what he has to say is very negative. There is a very good reason why so many people were attracted to Obama; his positive message of hope. He lit a beacon that resonated in the hearts and minds of the majority of Americans, and people around the world. Concerning black folks voting for Obama; they get a pass. As far as cultural differences and hard music lyrics, etc., that`s just a small element of mainstream culture. About Bill Maher; he`s just a mean-spirited jerk. Heartphone offers you a way to make all your pain go away, just be the change inside you want to be. To be fair, we all are able to grouse against those elements of government and society we dislike, but it is far more productive not to incite anyone. At least then there is hope for dialog.

Mr Chopra, I look at Obama`s actions and I cannot endorse a president that supports the escalation of the military presence overseas, violence and war. Sure Iraq may be close to over, but Obama is still supportive of the militariasation of the world. He has: - Signed the NDAA,an indefinite detention bill, into law - Waged war on Libya without congressional approval - Started a covert, drone war in Yemen - Escalated the proxy war in Somalia - Escalated the CIA drone war in Pakistan - Will maintain a presence in Iraq even after "ending" war - Sharply escalated the war in Afghanistan - Secretly deployed US special forces to 75 countries - Sold $30 billion of weapons to the dictatorship in Saudi Arabia - Signed an agreement for 7 military bases in Colombia - Touted nuclear power, even after the disaster in Japan - Opened up deepwater oil drilling, even after BP disaster - Did a TV commercial promoting "clean coal" - Defended body scans and pat-downs at airports - Signed the Patriot Act extension into law - Continued Bush`s rendition program http://stpeteforpeace.org/obama.html President Obama has claimed, as President George W. Bush did before him, the right to order the killing of any citizen considered a terrorist or an abettor of terrorism - approving the killing of U.S. citizen Anwar al-Awlaqi and another citizen. Enough blood has been shed by civilians oversees and American troops. Our children and their children will be ashamed of us, for all the lives that have been lost. These wars are effort away from the American people. The need of the people of America is so great - the unemployment, the foreclosures and the shrinking middle class. Where is the actual action to cut government spending, cut the wars and create an economy where the country can grow again? I think that in these troubled times Dr Ron Paul words of action resonate to me. ________________________________ http://ains-leigh.blogspot.com/

But you see it all so well dear Truthhurts. Can you then also take care of the fact that this duality can be solved. How could it otherwise be solved than by becoming present at your own heartphone at both ends? We all have the same dna, we all come from the same ancestors. Isn`t it time for us all to recognize this and embrace it? If you feel the same way than BE the change and ask yourself (like Deepak suggests): in what kind of world do I wanna live. And if that question is answered by your heart then LIVE according to it!!

First, I am not a Republican. I am Libertarian. When Blacks voted for Obama due to race, is that not racist? And yes, many college kids voted for him due to this reason and due to the media influence. Many celebs who are clueless about politics like Obama for this reason. When celebrities adopt kids from Africa as a publicity stunt is that not racist? Why African kids and not White, Asian, Indian, or Latino kids? Some of it is due to a publicity stunt and feelings of guilt and sorrow, which is racist in a way. Read White Guilt by Shelby Steele. And again, there is so much anti-White bigotry in the Black community from leaders like Farrakhan, the NBP, the flash mob incident at the Wisconsin state fair, Jesse, Al, the OJ trial, etc. Rapper Ice Cube use to rap lyrics that were anti-White, anti-Semitic, and anti-Korean. There is also a lot of Black/Latino tension and Asian/Black tension that is not talked about. It makes no sense why this these are not talked about. Unless you feel Whites truly deserve to be punished for past history that most of us had nothing to do with, and despite the fact that there were Whites who did good things. I am all for humane treatment and opportunity. But I get tired of the double standards and how many of you ignore racism against Whites and the facts that people like Bill Cosby, Angela McGlowan, and Shelby Steele have talked about. And while we are on the subject of tolerance. If Democrats are so tolerant, why is the far-left so hostile towards religion, especially Christianity? Example, Bill Maher and Jon Stewart hate Tim Tebow. And Tebow`s religion is a big part of it. So, how is it that someone who is spiritual or religious, would not have a problem with this? Also, why are White Democrats so hostile towards racial minorities who vote Republican? Think about that. Whether you agree with me, or not, or only partially, I think there is a lot that many of you do not see.

I do not know anybody who voted for Obama because they thought they would be thought of as a racist if they didn`t. That`s got to be the most absurd thing I`ve heard yet. I think that the only people who vote for Obama because they think they are going to be labled racist`s are racists.

People. Obama has done nothing as president. He has not fixed the economy and in fact, knows nothing about it. He got elected over Hillary by Democratic Super Delegates because of his race. Whether you want to admit it or not, many people of my generation simply voted for him to see history made or because they were afraid of the consequences of a Black candidate not getting elected. And how has that worked out? Since Obama got elected, we have had Eric Holder and his stupidity with the KSM trial and the NBP`s, flash mobs, and more race hustling than ever! Btw, I find it funny how it is racist to not vote for Obama. But Blacks and many celebrities vote for him due to his race. Hmmm.... It sounds like Depak only has a problem when Whites are bigots but has no problem with people like Eric Holder, Louis Farrakhan, the NBP, or when Whites are screwed by Affirmative Action, etc. And you say you are tolerant? Obama and his followers do not understand or respect the foundations of the United States. Instead of valuing and encouraging individual freedom and less government intrusion, they want forced social justice and more government intrusion. Republicans against Globalism? Excuse me? Democrats are for more government intrusion on business. Again, other than the Bin Laden incident, Obama has been a do-nothing. I lost respect after reading this. Good riddance.

What is the issue with Dr Chopra having a political opinion? I for one am more than interested an enlightened, educated, impartial and passionate dialogue from a man who speaks only truth as he sees it. Is that not what is missing in this world? Truth. It`s all that matters in every aspect of our being. I am not American, but in my humble opinion, if Obama isn`t returned to office in November, then we can all hope that God hears your famous, if not a little arrogant prayer. "God bless America".

Its time has passed and we must mover forward and beyond corporate/big money politics which plaque both parties.

Yes I completely agree with this article. No matter what policies one believes in, the mud slung at Obama is just deplorable. From one good thing to another, this President has shown he cares greatly about what`s going to happen to the shrinking middle class... He`s only been held up by the "Most Filibustering Congress Ever". No matter what`s good for the middle class, or what the majority of Americans want. These minority members are upholding what the Uber Rich decided the night the Obama`s won the Presidency: To make him a one term president. It does matter if you`re on the side of reason. Reason dictates he is far better (despite his inability to stop these filibusterers) of a choice than ANY of the GOP idiots - who want war with Iran, to end all entitlements, end all federal agencies, the Fed, the DOE, to apply (once again) croney capitalism that allows their friends to RUIN even more government agencies, to end the EPA and Minimum wage and Child labor laws. They want to push an abortion-free America - despite that abortion is also a medical procedure that keeps moms alive for their other children, husband, etc. They want to END the words Season`s Greetings because it offends THEM - not just have a holiday saying anyone can use - it MUST be Merry Christmas. OMG the policies are ridiculous. Give MORE tax breaks to the wealthy - who have NOW become the "job creators" - which anyone with any sense KNOWS most of the wealthiest Men and Women get their wealth from inheritance and investment (sometimes of that same inheritance). C`mon folks - an exponentially growing population doesn`t need LESS government - they need tax monies to keep up with with population. Cutting off revenues is bad for business... don`t believe me - Ask Mittens... he knows all too well that MORE revenues are needed for a growing company - and greedy shareholders. The choice is clear - We need another four years... before the end of the world - ahem I mean - before we have another Republican President. Danielle

Again,I am shocked at your assessment of this failed presidency, Dr. Chopra. I am no right winger but you have got to be kidding me? You continue to lose credibility with your denial that obama is a gross failure as a president. He, in now way, deserves re-election and it is time to give someone else an opportunity. While I do not believe Romney is the answer, I do believe his experience in running many ventures, immediately puts him way ahead of BO! Your claims about Republicans are seriouosly distorted. President Bush was the first president to fund stem cell research. He was against tax payers funding embryonic stem cell research bc not every tax payer believes that life begins at birth, as I do. Embryonic stem cell research can continue with private funding such as Muscular Dystrophy and Jerry Lewis. Why hasn`t Nichael J. Fox created his own telethon and stop playing politics as you sir do? As far as global warming is concerned, the folks running are all for creating alternative energy and also making the energy resources we have here in the U.S. more available to bring enrrgy costs down. You must be objective, Dr. Chopra, and take off the blinders of ideology. This vitriol does not suit you sir!

It would have been hard enough to vote for Obama after the disappointment of seeing him continue so many of the prior Bush administration`s flawed policies, but I find it impossible to vote for him since he signed the National Defense Authorization Act. My conscience does not permit it, nor will it permit me to vote for any of the conservatives. A trend does not, for me, trump Obama`s immoral signing of the NDAA. I hope I am wrong, but I expect to see the NDAA used to crush the people working for the very values listed here, tolerance, peace, futurism, etc.

Deepak has so many co-writers, all different personalities. So this piece could easly be written by someone else. Same as in politics. As long as we choose for one or the other we will live in duality. Politics is Pure duality. So for change to happen, indeed a radical new message of brotherhood needs to become part of the national dialog in any country (like Mark suggests)...

@Steve Houck. Of course it`s imbalanced. The republicans have made it imbalanced and thus telling it like it is will make it seem as it is. The republicans have stated and do ot deny that their sole purpose is to make Obama a one time president. No better plans or ideas just simply to point out Obamas shortcomings to make him fail the next election. That is scary to say the least onsidering the baton that was handed over pervious to this past Presidency. Surely you are smarter than that.

I don`t know what to think about this. It feels like you`ve come down to the ground and gotten caught up in the illusion. I can`t argue about your points that relate to the things we should be valuing in our co-creative process, but this feels like a gullible illusion-based interpretation and vote for Obama to me and I feel confused. I don`t expect that from you Deepak. I`ve come to feel that Obama has been bought and paid for like all U.S. Presidents since the one who got shot standing up for the greater good in 1963. And that the entire political process in the U.S. and almost all parts of the world is a complete elite/corporate-owned sham. We are sovereign beings. Overhauling the policies of our governments feels like taking a sword to a gunfight. We need a giant eraser to clean the slate in preparation for an intuitive do-over. That`s the article I expect from you - but then I suppose that`s my illusion and so I sign off with respect for your Deepak and all the good you do in the world. I dont understand why we need to identify anyone by their race such as Obama is a black man isnt he 1/2 white? While I embrace my "Indianess" to it`s max I want to be known for what I do or understand more than I`m interested that I`m in any position because of my color or race. I`m not sure what the US is going to do about the illegals here. It is a problem but I think the cow is out of the barn. Migration for me is not how much I can suck out of America but what can I add by coming here and retaining all the good that I met here. After the last elections I had serious buyers remorse, I remember Hillary Clinton warning us, maybe she knew something I didnt and I should have listened. If I make a mistake and I dont repeat it it means I`ve learned, If I repeat the same mistake it means I havent learned. The present state of constant handouts is not what Americans wants we beleive in capitalism and want the opportunity to work as much as we desire and acquire as much as we want ....

its interesting that all of expectations have falling short for the most part over the past few years. But still, I have faith in obama. His term has not been one of "smooth sailings" perhaps, but he sailed, we sailed, nevertheless. To say that I am not disappointed that the unemployment rate hasn`t fallen, would be a lie. But, for the most, we are sailing as a nation. We are evolving, its like those time before one reach enlightenment. You know, when your mind is sometimes in a state of confusion, and your lost. This is the state of our nation. It is the quiet before the storm. But this storm will be that that is replenishing, giving us much needed water. Obama, has not failed from the pointed of view of a college student(me). Instead, he is sailing us, readying us for that storm(cultural enlightenment).
