    Giving Up

    Category:  Ask Deepak

    Question:

I suffer and have suffered from numerous traumatic experiences throughout the course of my life. I have sought help in therapy and have not been able to do the work that I need to do in a thorough and complete way. I saw one therapist for a long time and he was the best, now I have seen quite a few more, as he will not work with me anymore. I realize that you have said many times that suicide is not a means of ending life, and that it is a psychotic response. I feel so incredibly hopeless because the truth is that the time for me to have reversed and worked on my issues has expired. I will not be in any intimate relationships, I have used up all of my dreams and hopes, my past and its patterns have destroyed all possibilities. In this case would you think that physician assisted suicide is an alternative, if so do you think that the universe would understand my need to end the crippling pain?

    • So sorry to hear about your situation. I know society is ruthless and unforgiving and makes it seem like there are no outs, you are stuck where you are and your "sins" of the past have condemned you to a hopeless situation now. People can be very narrow-minded, judgmental and cruel in this respect, without looking in the mirror at themselves. But pay them no attention, as they do not know what they are talking about and they are of a lower vibration anyway. You must listen to your inner being, who loves you unconditionally and is not even of this realm, but connected to higher ones and would not even agree with you that the situation is hopeless now. use meditation CDs to help to clam you down, and pray incessantly, for all good and bad in your life. All you need is one out, and you are on the right path! The only way to go now is up and it is right around the corner, no matter how bleak things may appear; as this is only an illusion anyway. If your inner being says it, it must be so, period. There are no time limitations with your inner being. So please, go on.

    • The fact that this person already has the awareness that they want this healing to happen is a huge step and I hope they see this! You`ve already taken the first step on your path to healing...and there`s no reason to stop now

    Presence of God

    Category:  Ask Deepak

    Question:

I understand the good churches can do for people. But I have trouble believing there is a god. Our universe is what... 14 billion years old and there are untold billions of universes. How can a god be present? It's a scientific fact about the big bang theory and the universe is expanding. I don't believe there is a god and the people that told us about this were less educated then us. I think there is nothing that gives the comfort or support mentally of a god and people cannot handle it.... Please your opinion on the age of our universe and the possibility of a god making it. Common sense says otherwise

    • Yes:) it is the very intelligence at the source of existence, contained within the cosmos, it is our the source and blueprint ... The experience of which cannot be accessed through analyses., only through going in.

  • Obama, 2012, and the Mousetrap Factor May 13 2012

Obama, 2012, and the Mousetrap Factor

    Category:  SF Gate

Although pundits declared that Mitt Romney emerged from the contentious primary season in a damaged state, the Presidential race isn't as unbalanced as it should be. Romney is considered unlikable ,too rich to appeal to working-class voters, and he registers an "eh" from large swaths of the Republican base.

But President Obama finds himself in a trap. Acting as the only adult in the room should have gradually shaken some sense into his critics. Obama doesn't name call or falsify the facts. He exhibits tremendous intelligence, flexibility, and a cool head in a crisis. Most economists would say that his policies saved the economy from a meltdown, and at this point, even with a sluggish growth rate of 2.2% (still three times higher than the growth projected for Germany), the country has done better under Obama than it could possibly have under John McCain.

But the trap might still snap shut. Obama is in danger of being "Carterized." Romney is using a simplistic but powerful line: This President is a nice guy who is in over his head. What makes this tactic effective is that the right has seized the narrative and made a convincing case built on false claims. Here are a few:

    1. In his first two years, Obama got everything he wanted, but his economic policies failed. In truth, Republicans threatened to filibuster 80% of Democratic initiatives in the Senate in 2009. Entrenched opposition from "the party of no" crippled many necessary economic steps.

    2. TARP was a massive failure that ran up the deficit. In reality, TARP funds have been largely paid back. Detroit was rescued, and to begin with, the bailout of Wall St. began under the Bush administration. Both sides should be thankful that it did. In the transition to the Obama inauguration, there was literally no leadership from the outgoing administration. Obama had to confront governmental paralysis as well as a collapsing economy.

    3. Obamacare has been a disaster. In reality, the only provisions that have kicked in, such as forbidding exclusion from health insurance for people with pre-existing conditions, are enormously popular. The real problem with the health care act is that the Republicans twisted it into an unworkable scheme that didn't cut costs, and thus engineered the very legislation that they now decry. Sneaky politics and unfair to the country, but so far a large sector of the public is buying the story.

    4. Fiscal stimulus has been a flop. In reality, objective analysis shows that Keynesian theory was right. Government dollars got multiplied in an effective way. The real problem was not having a big enough stimulus. Look at lagging, recession-ridden Britain for an example of what the right's favorite policy - budget cutting and austerity - actually leads to.

    5. Because Obama is unfriendly to business and entrepreneurship, the economy hasn't recovered. In reality, private hiring is more or less back to pre-recession levels (not the best news, however, since even more jobs need to be added to accommodate new workers entering the work force). The actual loss of jobs that plagues us comes from government cuts at the state and local level. The right's mantra that government doesn't create jobs is pure myth, since it certainly can uncreate them. Since the right's deficit binge promotes even more cuts in government jobs, adopting their policies would get us deeper into unemployment.

    6. The economy is on the brink of collapse under this administration. In reality, the gross national product, as of the last quarter, has reached its pre-recession high.

    • I must admit, I was surprised to read what comes across as a glowing endorsement for any political candidate, from a man who preaches (rightfully) that love, and compassion are the pathways to peace, and enlightenment. Both candidates you mentioned have at one point or another sacrificed their own beliefs to appease an audience, and gain support for their campaign. President Obama received both thunderous applause, and scornful chants from the American people a week ago, when he came out in support of gay marriage, but the real issue isn`t whether or not gays should be allowed to legally wed; the issue is why, in a country that has separation of church and state, does the government have any place to sanction and regulate what should be a spiritual reunion between two souls? In doing so, the government perpetuates a social norm, that doesn`t treat everyone as equals, as it implies unions or other lifestyle choices it doesn`t regulate, are lesser options. I believe in his heart, President Obama does want equality, but how can we earnestly support any candidate who doesn`t embody the true spirit of equality?

    • I am thrilled that someone I trust with honestly and guidance is attempting to give insight as to how he sees what I am finding confusing right now in politics. I am so caught up in the jargon and persuasions of SMOOTH TALK that I can`t hear anything. Thank you Deepak, for attempting to clarify some things simply so I can pull together some kind of focus on all of this. I think it IS your place to comment on this as a person, an American and an educated individual that supports the mind, the heart and the lives of so many going through this confusing and vital time.

    Family Ties and Forgiveness

    Category:  Ask Deepak

    Question:

In forgiveness, I ask the following; Once you have forgiven people (family) who have hurt you, caused trauma, never let your past go, and does not embrace the new you, is it wrong to not want these toxic people in your life? I have tried every which way to amend the damage that my family has caused me, but I see that it is a toxic cycle and they are the ones who are not willing to change.

    • When i saw your qestion, I thought i was mine. I`m in identical situation, and I did cut comunication, I can relate to how you feel as for you would like to have a family, but it`s way too toxic, and you are in between either sacrificing your feelings and emotional health and you have a family, or you are healthy but alone. I chose last,I was trying to fix things for 10 years and it didnt work it exausted my emotional health. One healthy person better than 3 sick people.I can definately tell you that I am much kinder and better person now. Who knows maybe one day everything will fall on it`s places.

    Truth and Religion

    Category:  Ask Deepak

    Question:

I'm 19 years old and have been a Catholic/Christian my whole life but as of late I've been questioning my faith. I've read a good number of your books including your depictions of Jesus and Buddha and both of those have really helped my focus on my spirituality. In doing so, I question has arisen in my thinking and may also be a little Christian and Buddhist influenced; If God is Just, Caring, Loving, Understanding, etc. why does being a part of a specific religion influence whether you're going to heaven or hell? Christians believe that in order to be accepted into heaven you have to become a Born-Again Christian. From what i know about Buddhism, it's about achieving inner peace within yourself, in turn the earth, and coming to terms with your soul. So what happens to people who aren't Born Agains and can't achieve the inner peace to realize that the bigger picture is out there? Do Jews and Atheists just fall into hell because they're not Born -Agains? And this even works both ways with most religions, they either ask people to convert or to accept what’s happening around them. So where is the actual truth? I'm having a hard time looking through the politics of my question and needed some insight into this. I believe throughout every religion there is an ounce of truth that can be used for the tons. I just don't understand how a specific religion can be favored into heaven; It seems counter-intuitive for what God offers to us and the gifts he's already given.

    • Good answer Deepak! It took me years to finally leave the institution of religion...it made me so judgemental! We normally follow our parents religion, brain washed...keep asking questions, then the light will come on...did a lot of research in books and on the net..religion in my opinion is all man made for power, and based on myths...You tube has a great video called Jesus vs Horas...try and stay opened minded, worked for me!

    • I really like this one. The way I see it; one should decide what religion to follow by their self, not forced or for someone else. Because religion can`t be taken away from you and it will walk with you wherever you go in life. So be cautious and choose wisely because your mind will be unbalanced if it cannot believe what it wants to.
